Salix-14.1 32bit
In this new version of Salix MC (Midnight Commander) does not open when I have no
Internet Connection or takes a very long time to open with slow connection.
I have reported this already under the thread "MC and Internet Connection". Only this time
the problem is even worse since the MC will not open at all when no conncetion.
Since MC is my main source for FM this has become rather frustrating. Furtunately due to
my ingenuity I found a solution. . I installed mc-4.8.11 in my /usr/local partition removed
mc from the /root partition and now MC pops-up instantly regardless of Internet connection.
And BTW in this new version of Salix the spell-check does not work in midori.

Re: MC not Opening
Thanks! Yes and no. Could not find and solve the root of the problem. Seems my ingenuity fails me.laprjns wrote:Maybe:Atip wrote:In this new version of Salix MC (Midnight Commander) does not open when I have no

Tried that HOSTNAME and hosts entries are the same. Did not change anything. So I stick with MC
starting from /usr/local/bin.
Re: MC not Opening
I checked with slackware-14.1 and there is the same problem with "mc"
taking as long as 90 seconds to open when there is no Internet connection.
Now the oldest of the forums which laprjns suggested to look at dates from 2006.
Is it not strange that 8 years on the problem has not been corrected by the
Midnight Commander community?

Here's another link:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... -on-centos
It might be interesting to look at strace to see if it reveals anything I suppose, but in practical terms, maybe some fiddling with /etc/hosts (is Slack's 'technically inorrect' entry to blame)? Obviously, back up the file before trying anything. Then again, it might be worth looking at the package to see if turning off that option helps.

Re: MC not Opening
Thanks mimosa! I think I solved it with that hint in that link.
Booted into slackware-14.1. Checking HOSTNAME and hosts and they are conform.
So the problem is not there as I found already when I ecountered this problem first
time in slackel and then in new versions of Salix.
Compiled mc-4.8.11 with --prefix=/usr.
MC would pop-up instantly with Internet connection disabled.
'mc --version' showed on the Virtual File System no smbfs unlike in original
slakware installed mc.
Compiled mc-4.8.11 with --prefix=/usr and (now that's the clue) --enable-vfs-smb.
MC would not open with Internet connection disabled and Virtual File System
showed smbfs.
I think I can now sleep more soundly again.
Edit:
Just checked with VL-7.1 where I do not encounter this problem;
mc is compiled w/o --enable-vfs-smb.
