Printing Issues Salix 14.0 64bit [Solved]

Post by jpg153 »

Hi all,

I am having persistent issues in printing from my Salix-box - Salix 14.0, 64bit, multilib.

The PC runs a Nvidia graphics adapter (current nvidia driver) and the printer is a HP Laserjet 6 MP, connected via an intel netportexpress pro to my internal network. Printing system is CUPS as supplied by Salix.

The HP Lj 6MP is known to run with the postscript driver, but always printing a blank page after the document is printed,
or with the Gutenprint driver.
However, on this machine, its only the postscript driver which is working. Whatever other driver I tried, none worked.
Either no image or corrupted image.

Now, if I want to print of PDF documents, some (but not all!) result in just a single blank page, regardless which PDF-Viewer I choose.
Printing from word processors works.

Interestingly, I am having an HP laptop (older model) running same Salix version, printing through the same environment to that printer,
flawless with Gutenprint!
Only difference is the graphics adapter (intel) and no multilib.

Where must I start looking to find out what goes wrong?

Thanks for you help.

It's multilib - in the sense that multilib isn't supported. It's unsurprising if it breaks something like this. The clincher is it works with the same Salix and the same hardware, without multilib.

I doubt nvidia is relevant.

You could try with 14.1 and multilib ...

Hi Mimosa,

well, I have at least just one package which needs multilib - the Softmaker Office.
I prefer it over LibreOffice (or any Openofficeorg-alike) as it is fast and easier in use, at least for the few
documents I have to manage.
But maybe I need to get rid of this...

I will upgrade to 14.1 and newer multilib and see. If it remains the same I will uninstall the office suite
and then multilib. And then cross fingers ...

I think you can do multilib in a more complicated way with a chroot, then you only use it when needed. But it sounds more trouble than it's worth. ALternatively, a VM?

Mimosa,

well I had a chroot environment under Salix 13.x, but i t would require a separate installtion of the 32bit system or the required tree.
And, although it did work fine, it had some downsides as well.
A softmaker file, which usually opens by double-click will not do under Chroot conditions.

So, VM, yes nice as well but a bit too much just for text and spreadsheet...

Maybe I will use VM later for other purposes...

Thanks.

Uninstall multilib

Post by jpg153 »

Before completely destroying my system, the way to uninstall multilib is:

:?: remove the gcc- and glibc- entries from the blacklist in gslapt/slapt :?:
then
:?:

Code: Select all

slapt-get update
slapt-get upgrade-all
:?:

Or is this the way into nowhere?

Thanks

I wouldn't risk doing that without being sure. How did you install multlib in the first place? Did you use alienbob's packages? There might be some instructions there.

djemos has written a handy script to install multilib, and I think there's an option to reverse the process. However, that might well not work if you installed them some other way. I believe there is a forum post about it with links, for future reference.

Well,

I followed the instructions from Alienbob's website/instruction set.

I also found what I posted as possible way out in a Linux forum written by Alienbob.
So I assume it is ok....

Thanks so far.

So,

I finally removed multilib.

Although I used a package called multilibpkg to remove it, I think the tool is doing exactly the above,
so simply replacing the "multilib"-version of the libs with their originals.

After that, printing seems fine on the first trials...
