Microsoft attempts Linux Boot Lockout!!!

Post by sqlpython »

With the event of Windows 8 MS will have a new (Secure :rolling:) Boot system.
....
This new system will prevent the Booting of Present day Kernels including LINUX.
Distardly Dastards..

Linux Top 5: Microsoft's Secure Boot Gambit

Few vendors and few topics on the Linux Planet inspire as much vitriol as Microsoft. This past week, Microsoft managed to inspire new outrage, as details about its secure boot approach for Windows 8 were alleged to be a potential risk for Linux. It was also a week that saw a delay for Linux 3.1 as the kernel.org servers remained offline.

I can't see this happening in the way it's been reported. It's just gonna be like a red rag to a bull for hackers (even more than usual) if they don't factor in other OS's.

Exactly! and if you really need Windows then use it within VirtualBox.

True except, Most new Linux Users come from The Windows World.
They experiment with Linux and then they are hooked..but if you can't install in a Dual Boot..There is the Rub!

... and what about old computers knocking around that can be rejuvenated with Linux? In ten years' time, maybe ninety percent will have this thing that means you can only use them to run Windows.

Even for those buying their own computer with the intention of putting Linux on it, it could end up getting more expensive - especially if Microsoft actively pursues a policy of "dumping" to secure their monopoly.

Here in Brazil, it is actually quite easy to buy computers with Linux on and save a little money. But most do so in order to install pirate Windows.

This looks so anticompetitive to me that it should surely be easy to challenge.

When I've read about this news some time ago my impression was you actually can install Linux. But Windows won't start afterwards as it considers the boot loader as corrupted. I did not investigate further because I don't care ;)

I think this link provides some details on what's really happening. Poster markofmayhem seems to have an understanding of what;s going on.

First of all, calm down..
It already clear, hackers will take care of it.
The second thing is smaller hardware manufacturers wont get that expensive license from Microsoft. I don`t think Microsoft will selling license (if they are stupid than will try it).
Third thing is, the breakdown of economy has already started, people will bankrupt, companies will bankrupt states will bankrupt and riots will start. So everybody will try save that much money as can and "nobody" will buy Microsoft products if there are free and legal alternatives.

Anyway i will not buy that goddamn thing.

PS: I`m just thinking about one thing, isn`t it the violation of anti monopoly law (or something like that)? :?:
I`m a chemist, please be patient.

Isn't it up to the OEMs or the BIOS companies to decide if they want to implement it? Secondly, Win8 is not released yet so why get too excited about it. Thirdly, build your own system or buy from the small mom & pop shops.
