Thanks for all the suggestions.

mplayer2 does play the video, but in slow motion (with the sound running at normal speed) so I think that the cpu doesn't have the grunt to handle the decoding in real time.
xine started to play, then crashed (but does work for some other video clips).

Thanks for the hints, that's closer but still no cigar. Both VLC & SMPlayer recognize the file, but although the sound plays, the video shows only the first frame [*]. (OTOH, I did spot an option in SMPlayer which allows rotation of the video, thus making it possible to view the videos I wanted to ...

Playing m2ts files in Parole?

I have Salix 13.37 Xfce installed on an HP 2133 Netbook.

While I have been able to get most of the video files to play, I have not been able to get parole to recognize the Mpeg-2 Transport layer files (.m2ts) produced by my camcorder. I'm sure it should be possible as Dragon Player on Kubuntu can ...
