The problem is with the cherokee slackbuild. It defaults to i686 for no reason at all, instead of reading the current system architecture like all other slackbuilds do (and like the slackbuild templates do). You could report this to the slackbuild's maintainer.

Typical! I come up with my own solution shortly after posting this.
I don't know if it is the best way, but this is what I did.
Open a root terminal and run the following commands
cd /usr/src/slapt-src/network/cherokee
vim cherokee.Slackbuild
Change the line that says ARCH=${ARCH:-i686} to ...
