Wow. Just really well-implemented all around.
Quick response, pretty, and MATE is very well-integrated. I think this will be my main Salix install.
MATE doesn't seem much different from Gnome 2. What changes did the developer make?

Re: Salix MATE 13.37beta1
Incidentally I was just reading the review of Gnome 4 on Distrowatch (see the thread on the marriage of Salix and Slackware) and found the answer to a question: it's MATE as in two syllables, a sort of tea drunk in southern Brazil, Argentina and probably Uruguay and Paraguay too, and an excellent ...

Re: Plugging in USB Crashes System
I'll have a look.
The problem went away after I upgraded the system and installed the -current kernels.

Plugging in USB Crashes System
Both my Salix 64 installs, LXDE and Fluxbox, crash when I plug in a USB key. It goes to a black screen (like runlevel 3) and text scrolls continuously, sometimes stopping. It looks like the same text scrolling over and over again.
Note! This does not happen if the USB key is plugged in at bootup ...

Porteus
Has anyone tried Porteus? It seems highly compatible with Slackware and, apparently, can use the Salix repositories.
It's meant to be a portable OS. I took it for a short live tour and liked the presentation and functionality.

Re: Allow me a noob moment, please.
Thanks, Gapan. I'm still trying to successfully upgrade the kernel. Haven't moved on to exploring slapt-get. The wireless is actually not that new, it's just kind of obscure. It wasn't supported natively in Ubuntu until 10.04, I believe.

Allow me a noob moment, please.
Hi, everyone. I'm diving into Salix, Arch, and Slackware right now, and just wanted to say: this Linux thing is hard!
Been reading a lot of Wikis and documentation and forum posts and sometimes it makes my head spin (like now). It is fun, though, when it feels like I'm making progress, and I ...

Re: Can I use the Slackware -current kernel?
So, the kernel build worked and I installed LiLo, got it to boot.
However, it still didn't pick up my netbook's wireless card (Realtek RTL8191SEvA2 rev10).
So I downloaded the drivers and did make, make install, and that didn't work either.
I tried modprobe rtl8192se (driver name) and it seemed ...

Re: Can I use the Slackware -current kernel?
Thenktor's suggestion does seem a lot simpler! But the kernel and modules just finished installing.
The information's here, though, now. And I'm not averse to reinstalling and trying that method. I've installed Slackware and Salix mainly just to experiment and learn. I do my work in Fuduntu ...

Re: Can I use the Slackware -current kernel?
It seems you really don't know what to do. I suggest you to find on the net how compile your own kernel because you need it.
Good luck
I've been trying to say that! It's fun, though, even if I don't really know what's going on. :D
Thanks for the good luck.
