Re: Welldone to all!

This is all so cool! I think the command line is a wonderful "secret weapon" to get things done quickly and cleanly. I never used it in Windows and very rarely in Xubu.

I'm still scared of it, lol, especially after I b0rked my previous installation. A Google search of "regularly used Linux commands ...

Re: Welldone to all!

I am amazed at the speed on a similar computer (an old Dell Dimension, 512 RAM, Celeron). Even the LiveCD (LXDE) was faster than installed Xubuntu! That has never happened before.

I went and messed it up trying to "trade LXDE for Xfce," I think. I must have removed the session manager or something ...

Re: pulseaudio

... I took a look at Xubuntu last night and noticed that pulse is listed in the mixer :?: .

Yup. Until 10.04 Xubu didn't include it, but now it's standard. I don't think PulseAudio is necessary to make Bluetooth functional in the way you describe (because it works in Xubu without PulseAudio). But ...

Re: pulseaudio

PulseAudio was a nightmare on every other distro I used that had it. Perhaps it's better on newer hardware than mine, but on my old dog it completely sucked. First thing I do with a new installation of Xubu is to purge that abominable mess from the system.

SalixOS works flawlessly without it! And y ...

Re: Yauap vs. gst123 vs. MPlayer (Command line)

I sure did! Well, I always mess up things I'm new at, and this is very different from Xubu. My experience with Xubu has been so easy and trouble free that I gained very little "Linux know-how" from using it. It's like the difference between "two years' experience" and "one week's experience repeated ...

Re: Yauap vs. gst123 vs. MPlayer (Command line)

SalixOS only wants me to run one application at a time. If I open even a terminal window while I have the browser running, the second application simply locks up and won't respond until I close the other.
That doesn't make sense.

You're right, it doesn't make any sense at all. I should be able ...

Re: Yauap vs. gst123 vs. MPlayer (Command line)

I don't worry much about RAM and CPU usage either, and I have only 512 RAM and an old Celeron processor. I like the lightweight apps for their simplicity more than for their speed, and I notice very little difference in performance between LXDE and Xfce on this machine, as well as between "heavy ...

Re: I replace Windows XP SP3 with Salix XFCE 13.37 in produc

I agree it's smarter than WinXP. I think most of us don't know any better because we just buy computers. And computers "come with Windows," so most of us remain ignorant of any choice at all, other than Mac, perhaps.

And most of us suppose that Windows includes all the software that "came on the ...

Re: PCManFM - Open as Root?

I wanted another look at LXDE since I hadn't played with it in a year and it was "under heavy development" (read: Beta) at the time. It was kinda lame back then, but fast. My big brother says it looks like Windows 98.

I just wanted to see if LXDE had made any progress since I last played around ...

Re: PCManFM - Open as Root?

And what makes you think you need to add wallpapers anywhere in order to use them? You can just use them wherever they are in your hard drive (as long as you have read rights on them).

Okay, so I've learned something else now. I'm still a newbie, y'know. But having the wallpapers in the ...
