Re: hello again
Hi, Elder. Yes, I did look at read up on SolydXK and thought seriously about moving there. But I was ready for a real change, not just a lateral move. I was more interested in OpenSuse and Fedora, both systems I had never used before, but Fedora's cutting-edge nataure was a turn off and OpenSuse ...

hello again
Hi guys, after a couple of years away I'm back to Salix. Very impressed with the XFCE version, it's as beautiful as I remember and even faster than before. After I got a new laptop, I distro hopped for awhile and eventually wound up on Mint's Debian edition. Not sure why, now. Debian is a great ...

Re: upgrade 13.0 to 13.1 udev question
Sorry, I wasn't clear enough in the original post, I kept the 2.6.29.6 kernel from 13.0.2a since it is free of the wireless problems that have been dogging me for the last several years. So keeping udev that was shipped with that kernel should (I hope) cause no problems, unless I add new hardware ...

Re: upgrade 13.0 to 13.1 udev question
Thanks, guys. I did upgrade everything except for udev and all is working well for now. I'll run it for awhile and see what happens. Except for an external CD-RW drive and the occasional pen drive I don't have much I need udev for anyway. I don't use this machine for cameras or a scanner, not even a ...

upgrade 13.0 to 13.1 udev question
13.0.2a is rock solid and stable, but 13.1 causes intermittent failures in my wireless connection- the connection is lost and cannot reconnect, trying to reconnect manually gives a 'bad password' error (I use wpa2.) This is NOT a Salix issue, it occurs in every newer distro I've tried, whether Slack ...

xinitrc bug?
Long story short, to keep my same kernel (old hardware didn't play well with new one) I put a fresh install of Salix 13.0 on, and used the wiki instructions to upgrade to 13.1. Everything went well, but on startup from GDM X session crashes. The xsession-errors log indicated line 139 in the xinitrc ...

Re: Thanks for a great OS
Files used the wma v3 (0x16) audio codecs. I believe this proprietary codec was introduced with W*dows Media Player v9.
-------
Yeah, my stoneage system still uses an old CRT. I'm used to dealing with old hardware, though, so no problem.

Re: Thanks for a great OS
Actually, no, Xine wouldn't play it either. The problem would appear to be with the codecs package. I went to the mplayer site, downloaded the current codecs package from them, extracted it and copied the files to /usr/lib/codecs. All good now.
Enjoying the system. Only other (very minor) problem ...

Thanks for a great OS
I've been a linux user for over ten years now, and a distro hopper for the last five or six. I have grown to love the simplicity of slackware but do not have the level of knowledge or time needed to manage it properly. Used Vector and Zenwalk for the last couple of years, then decided to try Salix ...
