Re: Slackware Linux 14.0 RC1

I've tried 'it' on one of my test-machines: noticeably faster X11, my only gripe is: Amarok is -on my machine- 100% silent. All-in-all: not bad for a RC ;-)

Re: Smaller graphical install than basic on Eee PC 701.

but I haven't used a soldering iron since shop class in junior high school  In that case, better you on't burn your fingers on this trick :) The soldering work required is quite 'fine'. I had the advantage of being able to use a fully-equiped electronics workshop with microscope for this 'mo...

Re: Smaller graphical install than basic on Eee PC 701.

First-off a warning: I'm an 'alien' here... No Salix running anywhere, but for those who remember my name from 'olden days': i'm running something similar ;-) On the bright side: i *am* using a little bit 'bigger brother' than the machine you mention: 7" Asus 4G (yes, the 4 Gigabytes 7" ve...

Re: MySQL at first time running

Not to contradict Thenktor :D You also might want to have a look at the contents of the file /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld: there is a 'mini-mini-mini manual' inside as to how to actually make sure that mysqld (the mysql daemon) is to be properly initialized and/or configured. The remarks from Thenktor are 't...

Re: Avahi - Zeroconf Networking

I would have very little to remark w.r.t. your configuration. Mind you: my 'right to speak' in casu SalixOS is -by my own estimate- extremely slim :D that said, this is my set of config options: ./configure \ --prefix=$PREFIX \ --sysconfdir=/etc \ --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=$PREFIX/man \ --with...

Re: Avahi - Zeroconf Networking

Enabling Qt3 and/or Qt4 in the avahi build does nothing more than provide Qt-bindings: a Qt-application could interface with avahi. Even with Qt3/4 bindings 'inside', you do not have to install Qt; Noting bad happens to avahi if you generate the bindings, but do not install Qt... W.r.t. pidgin: i ju...

Re: Avahi - Zeroconf Networking

The most-used avahi-interfaces (to the best of my knowledge..) are the C/C++ and -if you're running kde of any kind- Qt3 and/or Qt4 interfaces, approximately in that order. Please understand, you're dealing with someone who has never run Salix (shame on me :D ), so whatever i suggest may not even be...

Re: Avahi - Zeroconf Networking

On the one hand, avahi does a few things 'by itself', such as assigning IP addresses (if no fixed IP given and no dhcp server found). The avahi daemon does most of this work... On the other hand, avahi allows applications to 'register' services with avahi, which will then be communicated to other av...

Re: Avahi - Zeroconf Networking

FYI: (from memory, to the best of my knowledge :D ) - you can enable and/or disable the Qt3 (and Qt4 support) in the ./configure part of the avahi build: --enable-qt3/--enable-qt4, similar disable... see ./configure --help for details. - As far as i know, Qt3/4 support is optional: with it you can b...
