(SOLVED) Intro and USB Install on a M&A Companion Netbook.

Post by rokytnji »

Howdy. 1st. This is not my 1st rodeo with Linux.
I am a distro team member on a couple of Linux distros.
AntiX and Macpup Linux.

I am a desert scooter tramp biker that runs linux on all kinds of gear. Today I received my 64gig Kingspec 1.8" ZIF SSD for my M&A Companion Netbook. So decided to try something new. You guys are it. I run AntiX on the twin brother M&A Companion netbook with same specs, (ssd, 2gig ram, atom 270). I have 2 of these so Windows was out of the question. I am Debian skilled.
So why not?

Read The Frigging Manual. Md5sum was done of /home/biker/Isos/salix/salix-openbox-14.1.iso
86cd754c2366a5ecec0cac63236fb164

Code: Select all

$ md5sum salix-openbox-14.1.iso
86cd754c2366a5ecec0cac63236fb164 salix-openbox-14.1.iso
I broke out my Sandisk USB 2.0 Cruzer. U3 software removed long ago using Sandisk windows only removal tool.
I have used this usb for mutiple usb installs from Puppy to you name it. Mostly with unetbootin. 1st time I ever used
dd though. So maybe pbkau is the problem. I have broad shoulders and thick sunburnt skin. So I can take some flak. :)

Code: Select all

/Isos/salix$ sudo dd if=salix-openbox-14.1.iso of=/dev/sdb1
[sudo] password for biker
1398784+0 records in
1398784+0 records out
716177408 bytes (716 MB) copied, 73.1043 s, 9.8 MB/s

What the cruzer looks like when I am done.

But salix won't boot.

I tried this twice now. Same steps as above. I hate that my intro/1st post is to say I am having problemos.
I have other sticks like kingston and pny. Plus some sd cards. I will probably try that next tomorrow .

If the problem is with my steps. Let me know. I would really like to learn this distro also.

Well, that is me. I can jaw jack till the cows come home. If you google my user name. You can get
a better idea about me. I am one of a kind and have a masters in raising hell. In a good way.

Happy Trails, Rok

Just saw the fluxbox rc1 thread. I think I'll download and try that instead because I prefer Fluxbox to Openbox anyways.

Try dd'ing it again, but write it to the device, not a partition. Like this:

Code: Select all

$sudo dd if=salix-openbox-14.1.iso of=/dev/sdb

Thanks aprjns. That did the trick.Md5 checked downloaded Fluxbox 14.1 .iso. Booted right up.
Another noob question. During Install. I made a 8 gig root /. The rest of 64gig, /home. Type 83.
No swap. I have 2 gig of ram on this netbook with a ssd. I never run swap on ssd.

Picked Full install. Do not format after I used cfdisk type 83 earlier.

The installer stopped on

Code: Select all

/etc/rc.d/rc.S: line207 314 killed /usr/lib/seup/setup
/usr/lib/setup/slackinstall: line 147 5861 killed spkg -l --root, -$ROOTDIR -qq --no idconfig --no-gtk-update-icon-cache $package
root@salix:/#
My noob guess is that I picked a full install and since I am not hooked up to a land line but am installing wirlessly the installation failed.
I have to go over the Setup guide again I guess. RTFM. And see if I guessed right. I am thinking a land line is needed to pull in packages
during a install procedure. But i got ahead of myself when I got the usb working.

Thanks again

No that's not the problem. You don't need an internet connection to do any of the installs.
Do not format after I used cfdisk type 83 earlier.
This is the problem. You need to format both the / and /home partitions if they haven't been formatted already. I tried your setup including not formatting the / root partition in a VirtualBox install and got the similar errors that you got:

Code: Select all

/etc/rc.d/rc.S: line207 314 killed /usr/lib/seup/setup
/usr/lib/setup/slackinstall: line 147 5861 killed spkg -l --root, -$ROOTDIR -qq --no idconfig --no-gtk-update-icon-cache $package
root@salix:/#
Try installing again this time formatting both the / and /home partitions. The installer will give you format options.

Finished Install. 1st try using lilo install easy defaults with auto framebuffer detect gave failed lilo install.
2nd try I cheated and used auto install/partition and let it do xfs and make a /swap. I can turn off /swap
later and delete I guess. This ssd I bought is a low cost Kingspec that is not as nice as my other ssd drives.

On 2nd install when I got to lilo. I picked 800x600 instead of auto because I think my default 1024x600 is what tied the lilo install the 1st time into knots and caused the boot loader install/failure.

Some specs for you.

I thank all who made this distro. All the help has been easy peasy to understand.
I will try and help out here when time allows also.
If I screw up giving advice.
Do not be shy, Let me know. It is hard to hurt my feelers.
