I just fixed up Openbox & Tint2 panel with VLC and Orage running...

Have you considered gsimplecal as orage alternative? I like it a lot, since I don't use many of the features that come with orage (I just want to quickly see a calendar) and IMO it looks better (simpler). I have it set up so that it comes up when I click on the date section of tint2

https://github.com/dmedvinsky/gsimplecal (In official repo, if I'm not mistaken)
