Hello,
I have not upgraded to the latest version of Mozilla Firefox (16.0.1), and I am still using version 15.0.1. But, before updating, I would like to report an issue.
From time to time, Firefox pops up a window saying that an update is available, and suggesting to apply this update by clicking a button “Update Firefox”.
In the Updates preferences, the option “Never check for updates” is checked. I had never changed that option. I tried to choose another option but the change is not taken into account. I guess that the Salix OS package somehow enforces that option.
So, is everything normal?
Thank you.
Best regards,

Firefox update notice
Re: Firefox update notice
I think this is a problem that's been fixed, but Firefox's frequent updates sometimes break the fix. I'm not sure, but I think 16.1 has a working fix. Even if not, you won't be worse off than you are now
EDIT Also, if you do have the very latest Firefox, you may be spared the messages for a week or two anyway

Re: Firefox update notice
julienl, before upgrade try this please. It is good to check if it is working.
Type about:config on address url of firefox
and find the app.update.url
Double click on it and set it to null.
Then wait to see if another update notification will come up.

Re: Firefox update notice
Firefox is already up-to-date on my main Salix 13.37 Fluxbox PC, using the latest 16.0.1 version from the Salix repo. The About dialog still reports "Checking for updates..." each time I select Help > About Firefox.
The suggestion from djemos sounded good, so I erased all three entries found in about:config which began with app.update.url... So far, the About dialog still reports "Checking for updates..."
EDIT: Same thing happens even after restarting Firefox.

Re: Firefox update notice
You can apply changes to file:///usr/lib/firefox-16.0.1/salix.properties
Type this in about:config salix.properties
Type this in about:config salix.properties

Re: Firefox update notice
Thanks to everybody for your replies.
I looked for “salix.properties” in about:config. Three parameters are selected:
app.update.enabled
browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser
extensions.autoDisableScopes
All have the same value: “file:/usr/lib/firefox-15.0.1/salix.properties”.
This files does exist, and contains the following lines:
extensions.autoDisableScopes=2
browser.search.selectedEngine=DuckDuckGo (SSL)
browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser=false
app.update.enabled=false
app.update.channel=false
keyword.URL=https://duckduckgo.com/?kj=g&t=salix&q=
Updates seem to be disabled according to that properties file. Do you have any idea why Firefox is still checking for updates?
Beside that, I see that the default browser should be DuckDuckGo. It was actually the case when I had the version 14, but with the version 15, the default browser is Google. At the beginning, I thought that the Salix OS developers changed their minds, but I have a doubt now…
I followed djemos' advice, and set the value “null” to the parameter “app.update.url”. I'll keep you updated with the result.

Re: Firefox update notice
Hello,
Setting the value “null” to the parameter “app.update.url” has not changed anything. I still got the update notice.
Any other ideas?

Re: Firefox update notice
Hello,
I finally updated to Firefox 16.0.2.
Still, the default search redirects to Google, and not DuckDuckGo. I really think that there is something wrong.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Firefox update notice
Hello,
gapan: this is not fixed in Firefox 16.0.2. I now have messages saying that I should download and install Firefox 17.0.
This is annoying since this update check seems to overload my system (I have a small configuration).
Any ideas are welcome.
Thank you.
