Yes, get the jre or jrk tarball from oracle and use the slackbuilds slackware provides for creating a package.

It seems Firefox [inflationary version number] currently in the 13.37 repos rejects the java in the repos as too old.

Is it fair enough to leave it as an exercise for users to fix? Or could this too be considred a security update?

I think it should be considered a security update.

The java in 13.37 is indeed too old. Java in 13.37 comes from slackware too. But there is no chance that slackware, or salix updates it. Oracle has restricted the distribution of newer versions. If anyone wants to update it in their own systems, you are free to do so, by using the slackbuilds found in the slackware extra repository.

Hm but what about that iced tea thing? Couldn't that go in Salix 13.37 repos - or whatever it is that happens in 14.x, that means Firefox doesn't complain?

I'm afraid I know little about Java. But if there is a solution for the latest Salix, maybe there could be one for older versions?

For anyone wants to build in 13.37 openjre or openjdk and icedtea-web can download all files except .txz from http://people.salixos.org/djemos/salix/openjdk/7u40/ and http://people.salixos.org/djemos/salix/openjre/7u40/ http://people.salixos.org/djemos/salix/icedtea-web/ and run fakeroot slkbuild -X to build the packages.
It will also need xerces, xalan, apache-ant, rhino to be installed. There are on 13.37 repos.
Of cource he also will need much coffee. It takes much time for java packages to build. :)
