Multiple update notifications

Not sure if this is an xfce issue but I'm getting multiple notifications for package updates, usually 4 icons show up on the taskbar, but three are redundant.

Yes, this is a known bug. There have been a couple of more reports about this. It happens when you log out/log in a lot. Unfortunately it needs a complete rewrite. Maybe in the next Salix release...

What would be the workaround until the bugfix hits the next Salix release? The MATE system monitor shows multiple "salix-update-notifier" and corresponding(?) "sleep" processes active. Now, would it be safe to kill the superfluous ones?

Yes.

There's also no real harm from having multiple notifications, other than the icon taking up multiple spaces.
