Luckybackup / rsync

Post by Van_Vinkle »

From many years ago, I've been using luckybackup as my tool for protecting important files.

But, since I've upgraded to salix 15, luckybackup does not run well. It appears an error message like this:

Code: Select all

ERROR: rejecting excluded file-list name: lluis/.luckybackup-snaphots
rsync error: protocol incompatibility (code 2) at flist.c(994) [Receiver=3.2.5]
Digging into rsync forums, I realized that version 3.2.5-x86_64-1 (which is included in salix 15) of this software had some issues [https://github.com/WayneD/rsync/issues/375] with exclude parameter. As far as I can understand, new version 3.2.6 has this problem fixed.

Can we get in Gslapt this newer version of rsync?

Hi,

this package coming from a Slackware 15.0 repository, I suggest that your post your request in the Slackware forum. As soon as this request will be fulfilled and this repository updated you will get the new package using gslapt.

From what I understand rsync 3.2.6 still has this bug. It is 3.2.7, which is still not released, that will fix it. I'm sure slackware will upgrade the package at that point.

I didn't post this question at Slackware forum because some years ago, I posted a question on it, and, as some members sough that I was a Salix user and not a Slackware one, they said very clearly that I was not welcome.

Apart from people more or less polite, I've realized that the problem is not solved upgrading rsync. I downloaded version 3.2.6 and installed it trough "heroic" way (./configure, make...) and the issue remained, confirming Gapan's post. At the other hand, I could see that Luckybackup was not continued :( , which was bad news for me.

For this reason I ask here: What software do you use or recommend for backups in your domestic installation?

there is grsync but it has fewer features
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/network/grsync/

it's very recent, it's the slackware updates. slackbuild rsync-3.2.5 14-Aug-2022 slackware64-14.2 no guarantee of success with slackware64 15.0 slackware64 15.0
https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware ... rce/rsync/

good luck and keep us informed Van_Vinkle
