[Solved] Lock Ups with Salix 14 Xfce

Post by sqlpython »

I am talking frozen mouse pointer and all keys. The only item that works is the On/Off switch. :D
Yeah, I can smile but not all that funny.
I didn't publish this on the BUGS forum because I don't know that it is yet as and the lockup may be due to my hardware.
Has anyone else experienced any lockups with Salix 14 Xfce.?
Here is my History and environments.
I have made two installs with the Same Download/DVD..
.......One on my Thinkpad SL410 (Centrino) 4gb mem (which has not yet Locked ever.
.......Second on my New Dell Inspiron (i5 intel) 14z 6gb mem (which has locked about 5 times )

Each of these have 5 partitions the Thinkpad 3 primary and 1 divided extended partitions
The Dell Inspiron has 9 partitions all primary GPT running the new BIOS with UEFI disabled.

Each also has installed (besides Salix 14 Xfce) these Linuxes ..Calculate, Siduction, Wheezy, and then the last Linux is the Thinkpad has Sabayon and the the Inspiron Bridge/Arch..
Most Importantly, while all the other Linuxes on both machine recieve frequent use and all Updates.. NONE have Ever Locked or displayed any abnormal behaviors.
Maybe a Slackware issue that has not popped up yet but I can't Google an example.
Any & All feedback is appreciated.

I have expereinecd a range of hardware-specific troubles and my interpretation is that the particular kernel that found its way into Slack 14.0 has more such issues than the 13.37 one. In other words, there appear to be some regressions, as well as hte usual inevitable failure to keep up with the latest hardware. Upgrading to a more recent kernel is often beneficial. But on most machines, in my experience, all has been well.

Thank You for the reply.
I am running the std kernel 3.2.29 ..and 3.2.45 is available and I considered a change.
However,, then I read that some were having their own problems with freezing on 3.2.45..
Read here
http://blog.lysender.com/2013/05/slackw ... -graphics/

There does not seem to be many people on the net posting problems with 3.2.29. So, I am wondering if the potential issues will get any traction without complaints and attention.
I will keep watching and log my circumstances If and When the freeze occurs again..

UpDate
New Lockup Today June 7 2013..
Noticed that with Updates recently the atheros alx module no longer Booted.
Wouldn't modprobe either. So I had to reinstall the module.
Due to Updates I had to reinstall the Atheros alx module in Siduction & Bridge Also but not #! Wheezy nor Calculate.

I was considering that maybe a module was causing the Lockup and such unneeded module could be blacklisted. I don't see any that are trouble or unecessary.
Have a look.

i am having similar lock-ups of X server.
Mouse n keyboard dont respond.

But, my internet connected radio keeps working!!!

it should be a problem with x server.
Which log should I check?

I tried new kernel on repo.
it does not boot up at all.

^ Yes same results here..
Wifi Radio continues to work with GUI display Unblimished but Mouse/Keyboard locked solid.
I have also been wanting to check logs but have not got to read them as of now.

Also I ran the troubled install which is the Dell Inspiron 14z with Salix Xfce 14 installed for 9 straight hours without any lockup yesterday. During my test I ran non stop the Chromium Browser and Thunar. I used these apps multiple times. Further as I was working on other machines the XScreenSaver was continually stopped and started. The XScreenSaver was set to Random mode so Lots of Screen Saver variety without a problem.

So, I have not nailed down the impasse as of yet ...

Not really seeing anything in the logs that reoccur at point of failure except that posted below.

As these lockups have been occurring for over a month on the Inspiron 14z and can't determine the source of the problem I decided to reinstall.
Also I decided to eliminate all software possibilities by downloading and burning another ISO. This time I downloaded and burned Salix 14 Xfce x86_64s

So I will now track the newly installed 64bit Salix on the Inspiron 14z and report any lockups and General results of the install. I don't expect any issues.

I had this problem with Slackware 14. Happened four times in the first few hours, twice while playing Iago. When Iago wasn't crashing it still managed to use up 100% of my CPU and would freeze every few seconds.

I had a disc of Salix 13.37 Xfce, 64-bit, installed it, and have not experienced any lockups. Iago runs normally. I was about to upgrade to Salix 14 in order to get Calibre, but now I'm going to hold off.

Edit: Just found my notes from dmsg after the first crash. Not sure if this was the cause of the crash, but it stood out (sorry, I don't know how to format to post code):

kernel: [377.614440] nm-applet (3146): segfault at ffff3ff0 ip b63dbbae
Salix64 Xfce 13.37, Core i3-3225, MSI H77MA-G43 mobo, 8GB Mushkin DDR3 1600, Samsung 830 128GB SSD, Hyper TX3 cooler, DVD R/W, Seasonic 500W P/S.

Thank You fro the info @tigerflag
I don't believe that my problem was specific to Salix 14 nor Slack 14
I am blaming either the Inspiron 14z or a Bad burn.
I have had Salix 14 32bit Xfce running for months on my Thinkpad SL410 without incident.
More interesting would be a post of your

Code: Select all

lspci
command to see your hardware.
