I fail to see what you would gain with a separate /usr partition. And having more partitions increases the risk that one of them becomes full, while you still have plenty of room elsewhere.

I always found it useful to have a /usr/local/ partition where I install and keep programs
not found in the repos, however, useful for me. That partition is always backed-up
so by any kind of changes it can be called back. It does not have to be very large.

You always can make a backup of /usr/local as any other directory, there is no need to put it in a separate partition for that. The same applies to /home, by the way.
