Thanks for that. Weird that I first ran into that in connection with the full install. Anyway, things look quite acceptable. There are some visible clips between frames at times that become obvious and a tiny bit of blurring with some motion, but it is minimal and there is no audio lag. So I have to say that I think this has been a successful install for my needs, thanks to you and mimosa.

I would say that this proves my point that KISS is a better point of reference than the kitchen sink model. There are of course the issues from time to time with missing dependencies.

I'm glad you got it working. But I think the moral may be a different one. Simple doesn't equal minimalist, and the constraint you initially chose of building up from Core would have caused you to reinvent the wheel, as it were (and probably, learn lots of fun things on the way). The simple solution was to start from a standard Salix install. The fact you didn't get there with Slack is probably not due to its kitchen sink, but to the lack of the Salix dishwasher. As a bonus, you get a bit more space on your netbook. Even the missing library will probably be pulled in in due course, as Salix's extra repo grows.

Its good that you got it working to your satisfaction. Did you remove pulse audio?

No, I left well enough alone - at least for now :)

Didn't I add this as a dependency of i3 a few days ago?

No, which is weird as i3wm never refused to run before, on any install, with my pre-built packages. i3 ran fine on a Salix64 core install, without me getting that error.

Well I did an VM install of Salix Basic the other day (Thursday) and after updating the system, I installed i3 using spi -i i3 and got two build failures along the way. The two missing dependacies were:

Code: Select all

perl-common-sense-3.72-x86_64-1salix
xcb-util-cursor-0.1.2-x86_64-2

I did it again this morning and this time i3 install along with all its dependanies without problems. Here the list of the packages that were installed:

Code: Select all

i3-4.15-x86_64-1_SBo
perl-AnyEvent-HTTP-2.21-x86_64-1_SBo
perl-common-sense-3.72-x86_64-1salix
perl-AnyEvent-7.14-x86_64-1_SBo
xcb-util-cursor-0.1.2-x86_64-2
yajl-2.1.0-x86_64-2salix
xcb-util-xrm-1.2-x86_64-1_SBo
perl-JSON-XS-2.34-x86_64-1salix
libev-4.15-x86_64-2salix
libxkbcommon-0.5.0-x86_64-1gv
menu-4.6-x86_64-1salix
Maybe my mirror wasn't updated when I did it the first time.

Interesting. However, I am almost positive that I had updated slapt-get.

I ran into a problem, but fortunately still more or less within parameters. I use megasync for keeping a directory with my music scores synced with the cloud and my various computers. Megasync requires PyQT, and when that is installed, it pulls in QT among other things. Hopefully it will settle down, but at this point, there is a slight problem with audio/video performance when using Vivaldi and Megasync is synchronizing files. It is OK quality, but according to i3wm, the CPU is running at between 98% - 100%.
