Broadcom B43 issues

Post by jlane01 »

Hi Guys,

I just installed salix 14.2 64 bit and have a broadcom 4311 wireless card. I have the b43 driver configured and installed and can see my wifi network, but cannot connect to it.

I am typing in the password correctly, but it still won't connect using the broadcom card.

It will connect when I use a wireless usb stick with no issues.

I'm sure that I'm missing something, but am not sure what.

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome!

Can you post the output of

Code: Select all

lspci -v
so that we can see exactly which card you have?

Also please post the output of

Code: Select all

lsmod
so that we can see if the module is loaded.

Here you go. I can see that the b43 module is loaded, but other than that I'm not sure.

Can you try installing the broadcom-sta package? Remove the b43 one you just installed.

Code: Select all

sudo spi -i broadcom-sta
This will give you the "wl" modules, which is an alternative for your card.

That gets me back to where I was before. I can see the wifi network, but it keeps asking me for the password to the wifi network.

Are you sure you're using the correct wifi settings? WPA2, TKIP, AES etc? Also, it could be that your broadcom card doesn't support the encryption you're trying to use. Or it could even be the protocol, 802.11b vs 802.11g vs 802.11n. If your router has a respective setting, try to enable all of these.

Have you ever had this broadcom card work in the same network in any other linux?

Hello,

Your first post here started with the words "I just installed salix 14.2 64 bit [...]". Since you have not given any further information whether you have then taken the necessary steps to obtain an up-to-date system, I have the questions:

1. Has the kernel been updated to the current Salix version? To be able to check this, I am interested in the output of the command:

Code: Select all

slapt-get --search '^kernel-*'
2. After installation, have the other packages been updated to the latest versions?

3. Which network manager is used (Wicd or NetworkManager)?

Salix 14.2 is now more than six years old. After installation, one should update the kernel, as well as its environment, and any packages to be used in the future to get an up-to-date Salix system.

In my old acer notebook with the "Broadcom BCM4312 " Wi-Fi card I just needed to install "b43-firmware" and "b43-fwcutter" with Sourcery. As simple as that... works fine here.
