Cannot boot Salix 15.0 just installed: kernel panic

Post by demigaucher »

Hi everybody,

I am an old user of Salix (started more than 10 years ago with
version 13.37 !).

I use daily (and happily) Salix 14.1 on several machines, three
of them being old 32 bits computers on which Salix 14.1 has
been running fantastically well for years. I would like to migrate
to Salix 15.0 on all my pool of machines.

I burned a DVD, with which I attempted to install Salix 15.0 on
one of these old machines on an ext3 partition. To have the
situation as simple as possible, no other partition is present
(apart from the swap), and I choose to make Salix 15.0 install
Lilo anew.

Apparently, the install was successful. When I restarted, Lilo
began the boot, but after a handful of messages, the process
stopped and delivered the error message:

Kernel Panic - not syncing: attempted to kill the idle task !

I don't know what to do. Has someone an idea ?

So did I. I started with
Salix64 Xfce 13.1 CD ISO (x86_64, 64-bit), June 4, 2010 !

Maybe sooner.

As soon as I can donate money without paypal or bitcoin (or similar), I'll pay something.
I would send cash To what address? The address written with Greek
characters. Money bill in an envelope.
Or I would make a bank transfer, what IBAN/BIC? Why do one need paypal in Europe?
Am quite eager! Give me the needed data via private message, gapan, please.

@ demigaucher:
The cause of your problem could be a corrupted file.

Have you checked the data integrity of the downloaded ISO file?

gapan specifies:
(size: 1.4GB, md5: bbb839c08938f72e547fd3fa9ef121b0)
for 32 bit.

Have you performed a data integrity check?

A call of the type:

Code: Select all

openssl dgst filename.iso
gives clarity about the state of the downloaded file,
the one you have burned to DVD.

Addendum:

Your question was what to do?

If the data integrity does not exist, then a new download is necessary, then check the data integrity if necessary.
But if the integrity exists, probably an error occurred during burning or the DVD used was of bad kind.

Whatever it is, burn another one and install Salix again.

The command shown is for Salix. I don't know what is used to test the data integrity under Windows.

@demigaucher:
I've had some "Kernel Panics" with the new Salix 15.0 on my old machines with something like a Pentium 3, too. What kind of processor do you have? How much RAM?

Hi galmei, hi Bird: thank you both for your answers.

To galmei:
I checked the md5sum after download; then burned the DVD with brasero (which makes a check of the
burned data: no alarm). In any case, I'll repeat the download and burn a new DVD. If unsuccessful I
shall investigate using a USB stick (no experience yet).
Your answer leads me to suspect an ageing DVD reader beginning to cause rare errors. Thanks anyway
for your suggestions, I'll make another try and post the results if problems again.

Salix is one of the few remaining distros able to run efficiently and fast on old 32 bits hardware. Probably
the best (I tried Slackware: slower), It would be a pity not to use it.

To Bird:
Processor = Athlon XP 2400+ (i686, not so primitive, after all) with 2GB of RAM. It should be sufficient.
The only serious problem is the missing SSE2 instructions that new versions of firefox require. All previous
versions of Salix ran OK on this hardware. I did not migrate from 14.1 to 14.2 because one single but
essential app for me [KiCad] was (strangely !) inefficient and slow on 14.2 but ran OK on 14.1.

Best regards to all from the french Alps.

I also wanted to mention that as a possible cause.

The next time I add a DVD drive, it won't be fixed like I've always done before, but added as an eSATA or USB drive to avoid continuous operation and thus minimize wear and tear on the electronics.

Hm... you could try and burn the ISO file on a USB drive instead. Then you have to enter the BIOS of your PC and change the boot order. But some PCs don't boot from an USB at all, so don't be disappointed, if it's not working.

But your processor is really an old chap, made in 2002. Happy 20th aniversary! But it seems that the newer Linux kernel isn't tested properly on these old machines. Did anyone here got Salix 15.0 running on such an old device?

Unfortuneatly, some programs really got bigger and bigger over time and thus less efficent. I'd keep an old Salix installation for these special programs. Same goes for Kdenlive, runs better on Salix 14.1.

Yes I know, my newer machines all boot from USB devices. But I also have older boxes that can not boot from USB.

I also have an older homebrew box where I have to boot from floppy and then install from CD.

Hi all, and thanks for the answers.

Back on this forum after 2 weeks busy elsewhere !

I still suffer this "kernel panic":

I created a bootable USB stick, using "unetbootin", with salix 15.0
iso file upon it - easy - after having checked and re-checked the iso
file (2 downloads, and an "diff" instruction, to check whether the 2
copies are identical - they are indeed).

Then I booted the 32-bits machine on this USB stick (little tweak
needed in the BIOS, no problem). The complete install process
unrolled perfectly and LILO was installed.

Then, reboot on the newly installed Salix 15.0: kernet panic again.

Is the CPU too old (year 1999 !) ? Alas ! Doomed to *buntu ???

Best regards from the Alps
