Moving to Salix 15 - how 2 avoid trouble

Post by jpg153 »

Hi all,

I am in the process of updating my system (latest 14.x) to Salix 15 (64bit).
I am concerned about the nvidia driver, the proprietary one I use and wonder how to prevent X not starting because of
kernel issues etc.
How can I restore the nouveau driver (or any other "plain VGA") before I upgrade?
The nvidia driver has for sure blacklisted the nouveau driver and I am not sure if the driver itself is installed at all.

In other words, is it save to just uninstall the nvidia or do I need to go further?
So, what and where to look up and modify?

Thanks in advance.
Regards Gruß

If nouveau is blacklisted, it should be somewhere in /etc/modprobe.d or /lib/modprobe.d. Also make sure you don't have the xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist installed. I think that should be it.

But I guess you can also pre-download the nvidia binaries for your graphics card, make sure you have the updated kernel-source package installed, along with all other kernel packages and the proprietary driver should compile just fine.
