The Salix team is proud to announce the very first official release of Salix KDE edition. A collection of three KDE iso images are immediately available to our users, including 32-bit and 64-bit installation images as well as a live image that can be burned to a CD or used with a USB drive.

Salix KDE includes the elegant KDE 4.4.3 accompanied by a very rich collection of KDE centric software, all in the size of a CD-ROM sized image. The Konqueror web browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications included in this release, followed by Akregator, an RSS reader for KDE, Kopete, the KDE instant messenger and more. Wicd is used for setting up your wired or wireless networking connections.

In the multimedia section, Salix KDE edition features Kaffeine, a gstreamer based media player, Clementine, a powerful yet very fast music player and music library organizer that is inspired by Amarok 1.4 and of course K3b, the best optical disc burning application for Linux systems. The Salix codecs installer application can be used as in any other Salix edition, to quickly and easily install patent encumbered codecs to your system.

A wide variety of office applications are included thanks to Koffice, the standard KDE office suite. KWord, KSpread and KPresenter are the main office applications present while there are many more included that will satisfy the needs for almost any task, like KOrganizer, KAddressBook and the Okular document viewer.
In the graphics section, Krita, a powerful image editor and Karbon, a scalable graphics editor are included, together with Gwenview, a feature-rich image viewer. Many more smaller tools like KColorChooser, a colour picker and KSnapshot, a screenshot capturing application supplement the graphics applications selection.

The graphical system tools known by other Salix editions are present in the KDE edition too, making administrative tasks easy for everyone. Package management, as always, is done using slapt-get and its graphical frontend Gslapt. Lilosetup, a tool to graphically configure the Lilo boot loader is included too, along with many more tools.

As with all Salix editions, the KDE edition can be installed using three different installation modes, “Full”, “Basic” and “Core”. The “Core” installation mode is exactly the same that you get with any other edition of Salix and will install a console-only system that you can use to build a fully customized system. The “Basic” installation mode installs a very basic KDE system, including only the Konqueror web browser, the Gslapt package manager and the Salix system tools. Finally, the “Full” installation mode, features all software that is included in the installation or live images and will install a full featured KDE system.
The live image of our KDE edition can be used to showcase the Salix KDE system, but also to install it on your hard drive using the very easy to use Salix Live Installer graphical application. Persistence can be setup and used with the Live edition in an easy fashion, using a graphical application that helps you create a persistence file. LiveClone is another very important feature of Salix KDE Live as it lets the user create a custom KDE live image, that will incude all changes that the user has done during his live session. The custom live images that are created in this way can be used just like the official live image and the Salix Live Installer works with those custom images too, so this is really the easiest way for everyone to create his own custom live distribution using KDE.

Some screenshots of a Salix KDE system can be viewed at our picasa web collection at: http://picasaweb.google.com/salix.artwo ... KDEEdition#

Congratulations to the SalixOS developers. It looks very good here, at least so far. I expect this release will bring more people to SalixOS. Not everyone likes a lightweight desktop the way I do.

djemos figured out a way to make localization packages fit in the kde live image while staying within a CDs size limit, so now there is another live image available. This one includes support for most languages without needing to install any extra language packs for KDE. Just select your preferred language when booting the live image and everything in KDE will be speaking your language.

The original announcement has been edited to add links to this new iso and the downloads page has been edited too.

Thanks djemos! :)
