mimosa, are you running gmountman under xfce or xmonad? If you're running it under xmonad you probably need to start it with dbus-launch (either gmountman or preferably xmonad itself).

As it happens, I am running it under xmonad :D

... and it is conceivable that the problems I reported earlier coincided with when I was packaging another WM.

To call xmonad using dbus-launch, do I just put in the xmonad.desktop file in xsessions

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/dbus-launch xmonad
instead of

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/xmonad
(Or if not using xdm/gdm, accordingly in xinitrc)

?

EDIT

I can confirm that works and solves the problem with gmountman

mimosa, look in the xinitrc.pekwm file for an example. The xmonad.desktop file could just launch the xinitrc file then.

Indeed, the xmonad at src comes with its own xinitrc that looks similar:

http://slackbuilds.org/slackbuilds/14.0 ... trc.xmonad

I haven't generally used .xinitrc in the standard way with multiple WM setups. In this case (xfce +xmonad) I assume there's no conflict (that xfce doesn't use .xinitrc when called from the login screen). Where there is a conflict, in the past I have written a wrapper for each WM to copy xinitrc.{WM} over .xinitrc then do startx. I'm sure that's not the proper way to do it, even when not using gdm/xdm.

In this case, would there be anything wrong with having the .desktop file just call

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xmonad
or copying it to ~/ and

Code: Select all

/home/{user}/.xinitrc.xmonad
?

I think this time round (when 14.0 is released) I'll try and set things up more tidily: with Ratpoison as the default, but booting into runlevel four and offering a choice of WMs. I generally use Openbox if I want to use a conventional WM, and in the past, it had its own partition (now displaced by Salix x86_64 RC1); but there's really no need for that.

Nothing wrong with that, as long as it works.

I have tried one DVD and it played fine. Then I tried another and had the same problem. Both play fine in 13.37. I don't know why. If anyone has any idea go ahead and say it.

Maybe the DVD that won't play requires some different codec.

After installing vlc and using parole I managed to read a music DVD without any difficulty!

I see that RC2 is up at:

Code: Select all

http://sourceforge.net/projects/salix/files/14.0/salix-xfce-14.0RC2.iso/download
(Sorry, the forum won't let me post links yet)

Is this safe to try?
