And by golly this Salix 14 version is really fast.

Today I'll be posting my review of Salix 14 on LinuxQuestions: 9/10 again! A great job.

All we need now is for a "tick the box" provision of encryption for /home. Fedora, Fuduntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, ZevenOS, and ZorinOS all have it: could you adapt someone elses code?

Hmm. I was going to say ecryptfs provides this already (via the CLI tools), but the tools don't seem to be readily available for Salix.

Thanks DavidMcCann.

About encryption on the installation process, it could be possible I guess to add this, but one has to take this task. Unfortunately, no one in the team use /home encryption I think. But as the installation process is not complicated and is hosted in Git (on github), one could try to modify it and ask for a merge/pull request.

XFWM checks /etc/fstab. I dunno why. You can get rid of those icons by putting a line for each one
in /etc/fstab. If you don't want them mounted, use the 'noauto' option. The instant you save the
file, the icons will disappear.

Xfce 14.0- can't use wmctrl to control xfwm

I downloaded/compiled/installed wmctrl from sourceforge. It runs without complaint, and I can use 'wmctrl -n 5' to increase the number of workspaces. But it won't list or control or move any windows. I filed bug# 9573 with xfce.org but they say "No reason for this, nothing has changed in xfwm4 regarding EWMH support." So maybe it's a Salix14-64-XFCE specific bug. For an example of how this should work, go to user.cavenet.com/rolandl and get the file timer.txt. I renamed it because the crappy MS server provided by my ISP won't serve a file called 'timer'. I dunno why.

Other issues: archive needs chromium-browser. 'vi' produces weird colors. How to disable? And why is some developer's taste in colors forced on users? Shouldn't that stuff be bog-standard at install? I'll try again at version 15.

Problem not solved. I mount this partition:
UUID=927CA25A7CA238BD /media/927CA25A7CA238BD ntfs-3g gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002 0 0
In what problem is?

I have Salix 14 x86_64 edition. I tried to install wine and have a problem with fonts - freetype libs not found. I installed compat-32 libs (including freetype) from this:

Love my Salix Basic installs!
  • Even though I select NetworkManager to handle my network at install the daemon script is not turned on in /etc/rc.d, the dep libnl3 is not even installed (nor modemmanager/3g provider info), and for the nm-applet to work you have to manually install something like mate-polkit
  • Slackware 14.0's usbboot hangs with my Aspire One netbook on the syslinux screen - so made an extlinux (ext2) loop stick with Salix kernel+initrd and that booted to setup extremely fast :o
