Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following issues:

A slapt-get search shows libXcomposite and libXdamage both installed on my machine. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the virtualbox environment or an issue with the beta and I am not seeking a solution. Just reporting an issue for developer(s) if it is an issue with the beta.
composite effects are disabled. To enable them delete the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/disable-composite.conf
or
edit the file and change Disable to Enable

go to systemsettings and choose the cube or the other effects.
