Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following issues:
Required X extentions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.
A slapt-get search shows libXcomposite and libXdamage both installed on my machine. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the virtualbox environment or an issue with the beta and I am not seeking a solution. Just reporting an issue for developer(s) if it is an issue with the beta.
composite effects are disabled. To enable them delete the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/disable-composite.conf
or
edit the file and change Disable to Enable
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Log out and Log in again on kde.
go to systemsettings and choose the cube or the other effects.

Acknowledged - and thank you for your reply. While, not my original intent, I think I may just go ahead and take my desktop for a spin.

Just wondering... does Salix KDE 14 use NetworkManager, now that it is being used by Slackware, or does it still use wicd?
