Salix OS

Very solid release. I am testing Salix Xfce 14.1, Slackware 14.1, and Debian 7.4 as replacements for several WinXP boxes at work. They just need to be able to run Filemaker Pro (via WINE), Firefox, Thunderbird, Acrobat Reader, and print documents. Salix may work very nicely, with a much smaller installation than Slackware or Debian. spi is a very nice addition.

Is it possible to upgrade directly from Salix 13.37 to 14.1 using Gslapt?

Absolutely not. You would need to upgrade to 14.0 first - and there is no way Gslapt can do that. See the wiki for instructions.

Under the circumstances, you would probably do better to back up your data and do a fresh install.

However, there is no need to upgrade at all; 13.37 will continue to be fully supported for the foreseeable future, and if your system is running well, it should continue to do so as it is.

Thanks. I've been *extremely happy* with 13.37 and don't want to upgrade. The only problem is I can't get Hulu to play with any of my browsers (I posted a thread about this in the Problems forum). Apparently Firefox v.28 can use the Hulu player, but the package repository for 13.37 only goes as high as Firefox v.24.4.

13.37 was a very good release, and you're not the only one who's still using it. I suppose the question is how important this hulu thing is to you.

You could always try building the 14.1 Firefox package in your system. My guess is that might not be altogether straightforward, but it could be worth a try.

On the other hand, maybe another extension (or browser, or application) could provide an acceptable substitute?

Upgrading to Salix 14.1 won't help you get FF28, as far as I can tell the 14.1 repos do NOT contain FF28, only FF24.4 ESR (SalixOS having decided to track only the ESR version, not the ever-changing main FF

Yikes, you're right. I misread Distrowatch.

Guess I'm out of luck since 24.4 is the version I have. Hulu won't play in any browser that comes with 13.37.

Flash v.11.2.202.359-x86_64-1gv is apparently the last supported version for linux. Wish I knew why FF v.28 is working with Hulu.

ElderDryas: thanks for pointing that out. Of course, it also makes sense that Salix 13.37 offers the same version - for security reasons. I imagine the *next* ESR will support Hulu, and presumably it will be available in the repositories for all Salix versions.

IIRC, the next ESR will be 32...so, a ways away (I hope). I'm not looking forward to all the "improvements" that are coming down the pike .

Actually it is possible to upgrade straight from 13.37 to 14.1. I have done it at least twice, but you really need to know what you are doing. it's basically a matter of knowing how to merge the instructions for upgrading 13.37->14.0 and 14.0->14.1 together.

But, that will not give you a newer firefox as orhers have pointed out. However it should be quite easy to make your own firefox 28 package if you want to. It really should not be any harder than taking the SLKBUILD file and changing version numbers...
