We now officially have an Openbox edition!

Salix Openbox 14.1 brings the Openbox window manager, teamed with fbpanel and SpaceFM to create a fast and flexible desktop environment. This is the most lightweight edition we have so far among our 14.1 releases and everything has been tweaked to provide a desktop experience comparable to other Salix editions. The development of this edition involved a long and rigorous period of testing and the final release has evolved a lot since the first beta.

This release comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours, with both fitting comfortably within the size of a single CD. The 32-bit flavour is also our first 14.1 release that supports i486, non-PAE capable systems by using the respective kernel, although the default is still the i686 PAE SMP kernel.

The focus of this release has been to provide a lightweight and fast system, so the application selection has been tuned to that effect. The default web browser included in this release is Midori, while the default e-mail client is Claws-mail. The internet/network applications also include the Pidgin instant messaging application, the Transmission torrent client, the gFTP for connecting to (S)FTP servers, the Wicd Netowrk Manager for connecting to wireless and wired networks and Sakis3g for connecting to 3G mobile networks.

The included office applications are Abiword, for any word processing tasks, the powerful Gnumeric spreadsheet and the Atril document viewer.

There is also a full selection of multimedia applications in this release. The Whaaw Media Player is here to cover video and audio playback, Exaile is included as a very capable music collection manager, while Brasero can be used to burn any sort of optical medium and Asunder to rip audio CDs. Of course the Salix Codecs Installer is available in the menus for easy installation of restricted codecs.

In the graphics section, Viewnior is used for viewing image files and the powerful GIMP for editing them. Simple Scan is included for using your scanner.

Geany provides a full featured and lightweight programming IDE and Leafpad is included for simple text editing tasks.

Several Openbox configuration tools have been included, like obconf, obkey and obmenu, so you can easily tweak your installation to your liking.

All the Salix system tools are present to make system administration easy and straight forward. The Gslapt package manager is here to offer access to both Slackware and Salix package repositories, while Sourcery provides an easy way to interface with the SlackBuilds.org and the package building scripts that it offers. Package update notifications are handled by the non-intrusive Salix Update Notifier application.

As always, the installation can be performed using three different installation modes. A Full mode installation, installs everything included in the installation medium, providing a lightweight system the follows our "one application per task" policy. A Basic mode installation will only include the basic packages that make up the desktop environment, mainly Openbox, fbpanel and SpaceFM, the collection of Salix System Tools and the Midori browser, making it ideal for anyone who wants to built a desktop environment with a custom application selection. Finally the Core mode installation is the same as with any other Salix release and will only install a command line based system, without any graphical environment at all.

Does this edition have power management equivalent to the XFCE edition? I prefer Openbox, but 14.1 XFCE is really getting great battery life out of my laptop.

Hello Salix Developers and Community,
I have a question regarding the default choice of Wicd Network Manager and SpaceFM. I thought two packages were no longer maintained. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Wicd: it seems that it has not received any updates for a couple of years, but are you sure that it needs any? As far as I know there has been no "official" decleration by its developer(s) that it is unmaintained. Even if it is, is there anything wrong with it? Have you found a bug that is not fixed?

SpaceFM: yes, it is now officially unmaintained. The developer decided to abandon it shortly after we had released one or two betas of our openbox edition. Having looked at the code, I don't blame him, it's a huge mess that is probably impossible to port to GTK+3. But the decision has already been made and we couldn't change the default file manager at that point. We have already patched it a lot for changing default functionality and we may continue to patch it if any further problems arise for 14.1. But we will definitely not use it for the version that will come after 14.1.

Thanks gapan for the reply. I have no problem with either of those choices, wicd works fine for me and spacefm is an ok file manager. I was just confriming what I thought I knew.
Keep up the good work :)

Thank you! As it happens, I have a vintage 13 year old Toshiba Libretto L3 which sports a Transmeta Crusoe TM5600 600MHz processor, which does not support PAE. The system has 384MB of RAM and an upgraded hard drive so it should be able to run SalixOS 14.1. I'll definitely give it a try. There aren't many distros left that support this processor.
