I suspect that something associated with the most recent update has partially broken GnuCash 4.10 [installed from the standard Salix 15.0 repo via Gslapt]. It was working fine before I updated last night.

Although the program still works normally regarding data entry, financial calculation and saving files, it is behaving oddly with respect to internal theming and "remembering" / accepting settings in the Preferences.

When it's first started from the menu (Salix > Office > GnuCash), the program now opens an Unsaved Book window rather than opening the most recently used .gnucash file (as it did before the update):

Image

After I manually open my .gnucash file, the register / ledger no longer uses the program's built-in color theme, nor does it display the usual horizontal and vertical lines (as shown below):

Image

I tried several times to change the preferences (Edit > Preferences > Register > Graphics). However, selecting / ticking the three settings I want (viz., "Use built-in color theme", "Draw horizontal lines" and "Draw vertical lines") has no effect. I don't know why ...

I changed my theme to Adwaita-dark but that did not make any difference. I also removed GnuCash via Gslapt, then reinstalled it; however, this problem persists.

I'm not intending to cause you further headaches, gapan, but thought I should mention it since you requested that we report problems.

Reminder that if you have a fresh beta installation, you will need to first remove the previous package and then install the new one:

Code: Select all

sudo spkg -d qogir-icon-theme
sudo slapt-get -i qogir-icon-theme
The default Qogir theme now includes dark panel icons, so you can actually tell what runs in the tray. There is also a -dark variant as well as a -dark-panel variant, which is meant to be used with light themes that otherwise have dark panels. There are also several other improvements with respect to individual icons.
I tried doing this (including upgrading spkg) and got the following output (not all of it still available):

Code: Select all

WARNING: Can't remove directory usr/share/icons/Qogir-dark. (Directory not empty)
mimosa[~]$ sudo slapt-get -i qogir-icon-theme

EDIT

also I can now see NM and leafpad, though when I hover over it, it announces itself as 'l3afpad'; but most other icons are replaced by generic grey boxes looking a bit like xterm icons. The same is true in Thunar, for example, for the back button.

I thought I had done, but something obviously went wrong there. I now see what I think I ought to be seeing. Comments:

L3eapad still has the typo in the hover-over text

I still don't like the browser icon, it makes me think of a clock

Where yesterday I saw a "barchart" icon for Network Manager (before I saw nothing) now I see a "radar" icon. Maybe that's what it's supposed to be but I prefer the other one.

I had the same issue like mimosa, and I did upgrade spkg first.
However, I wasn't sure about it 'being an issue for most'.
I, of course, was adding some additional icons.

I never used GnuCash before, so maybe I'm just misunderstanding something here ...

"When it's first started from the menu (Salix > Office > GnuCash), the program now opens an Unsaved Book window rather than opening the most recently used .gnucash file:"

I made a fresh install (and had nothing to import), let it create the default tables and closed the program.

On every subsequent restart, it opened where I left off.

"After I open my .gnucash file, the register / ledger no longer uses the program's built-in color theme, nor does it display the usual horizontal and vertical lines#:"

"The program's built-in color theme" should pick up the GTK+ 3 themes in use for the main interface, and there are some additional settings for the tables within (custom) CSS settings -- is that the own theme? [Maybe I'm just wrong about this one.]

Didn't really try if and how that actually works; the app-site also states "Standard icons are now specified in the XDG Icon Naming Specification. This will allow each theme to use its own set.", but I didn't notice that program actually used Qogir icons, but it always used its own icons instead.

As of "Draw horizontal lines" -- GnuCash definitely does draw the horizontal lines.

Yes, they are extremely pale, but that's the Adwaita (and Salix - forked Adwaita) issue. With some other theme, they get better visible.

However, I did not activate them under Edit > Preferences > Register, but under Edit > Preferences > General.

My first impression was that Edit > Preferences > Register settings get ignored, but ...

It's probably me -- I didn't have patience for restarting it...

The color themes changed instantly.

P. S.
Salix-dark is missing the 'Close' button, which is a bug (described in links above), but irrelevant for your case.

Unfortunately, I can't force you to 'like', what you dislike, but maybe I can try to explain you 'why' some things ...

Not sure about L3eapad being a typo.

Check the desktop file, and you'll find out, is it, or is it not.

Usually, the name of the desktop file is the right name of the program, as its creator named it.

https://ibb.co/Z1cWYL1

I have some other issues with it, the name is the only one, I don't care about.

I still don't like the whole icon theme, but not because of the web browser icon.

The whole icon set is a mix & match, paired with 'The Linux Quality' (Assurance).

https://ibb.co/2hxRjNm
https://ibb.co/bNmXz1Z

https://ibb.co/09MWxpK

This then results in that (in~) famous '1 Px issue'.

https://ibb.co/H2Qc2Kw
https://ibb.co/7tyDs5n

That Thunar icon e.g., it has wrong shape and color too.

And besides, the theme is not original, and it misses color folders and those 'lighter' / 'darker' types.
What's that and why, in another post, but there was a good reason, why I proposed another icon set.

"Where yesterday I saw a "barchart" icon for Network Manager (before I saw nothing) now I see a "radar" icon."

And you are using the exact same device, with the exact same type of connection?

Namely, connected is not same as connected.

I didn't notice any change.

https://ibb.co/0X0bp9H

If you visit the folder from the screenshot, you'll find out that there are many different icons, for one and the same thing.

The difference is in the connection type and there are different icons for each type -- for a good reason.

That's more than a matter of taste -- that's extremely important functionality.

If it works properly or not, is the whole another story.

Imagine you go from a school to a school, you lift your laptop from one docking station, and you place it on another.

The fact that you can see the Ethernet cable and a WiFi-router or repeater, doesn't mean that you are connected, and using mobile broadband can be expensive.

Different icon for a different type of connection tells instantly what connection is active, and it is much more convenient then 'troubleshooting the network connections' -- at the end of the day, one is paid to teach the students the difference between the good and the bad design ...

Hello all,

There seems to be a debate on the theme. On my side, I did not the problems encountered by some users.
I must say that I have customized the global theme, the icon, cursors theme and the window theme.

Here my choice theme work perfectly

Theme: Flat-remix-gtk-brown-dark
Icon: deepin2022-dark
cursors: vimix-cursors
Windows: theme-flat-remix-dark-XFWM

I don't think that for Salix developers, they have to spend much time on the look. It's very suggestive from person to person.

Some problems I'm having after this week.

Gslapt crashes when updating.
PdfArranger does not launch
When I launch it from the terminal, there is a problem resolv with python 3.9

the test installation is still on Virtualbox. I'll switch to hard drive this week. I hope. I'm running out of time, I'm in the biggest season at work.

Best regard

Hi, missTell,

Thank you for taking the time to experiment with GnuCash and for researching the theming issue(s), etc. I appreciate your help.

I encountered almost the same problem on another Linux distro that I run. Although I've used GnuCash for years and am fairly familiar with the program's operations, its configuration and theming settings are over my head. I had looked before at some of those sources which you mention, and experimented with various changes. In the end, nothing I did made any difference. (It turned out that the issue was likely caused by some updates in GTK-related packages which interacted badly with some components of the MATE DE. A later update eventually solved the problem.)

Here on Salix Xfce today, I tried some additional workarounds -- including reinstalling GnuCash via Gslapt, deleting the ~/.config/gnucash directory, and even tinkering with some settings using the dconf-editor (based on an online tip I read). None of that worked.

I finally decided "What the heck!!\%# ... This is a beta and I have nothing to lose." So I removed GnuCash and tried installing the Flatpak of GNC 4.10 via Flathub.

Amazingly, the Flatpak is working fine. GNC starts up as I'm accustomed to and the register / ledger "looks like it's supposed to":

I'm a bit frustrated that I had to resort to the "nuclear option." But I felt like I'd already sunk enough time into looking for a solution.

Thanks again for your interest and feedback. :)

Hi, mimosa,

I also thought it was a typo, but it's not.

Some Google-fu revealed that L3afpad is a fork of Leafpad. L3afpad supports GTK3, whereas Leafpad uses GTK2.
