About the password, you can change it to a "bad" password after installation, with just a warning.
The point here is that if I want e.g. 1234; password or qwerty password etc... It should always accept that password and only warn you about it :?
But, you're not able to change it after installation like that:

Code: Select all

$ passwd
Current password:
New password:
BAD PASSWORD: The password is shorter than 6 characters
New password:
BAD PASSWORD: The password fails the dictionary check - it is based on a dictionary word
New password:
BAD PASSWORD: The password contains the user name in some form
passwd: Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service
passwd: password unchanged
These rules are enforced by PAM. It is possible to edit the PAM settings and allow any password though.

gapan, you're right, but if you do

Code: Select all

sudo passwd mimosa
then it will just warn about the bad password, but still accept it.

Oh, I hadn't realized that. It's weird that it accepts it that way.

  • pdfarranger does not launch after installation.
Yes, you need to also install the python-packaging and pyparsing packages. I'll add them to its dependencies. Thanks!
Thank you, gapan. :) After installing those two packages, pdfarranger starts up normally.

  • The Multimedia Codecs Installer was not removed from the menu after being run.
Although the multimedia codecs script downloaded and installed codecs correctly, when it finished, I chose the option of removing it from the menu. (I'm 99% sure that I clicked on the appropriate button :? ). However, when I checked, it was still present under the "Multimedia" section of the menu.
I just tried it and it worked. You can try again with something like:

Code: Select all

sudo spkg -d lame
Run the codecs installer, install the package that was removed and select to remove the package.
I tried your suggestion but it didn't work, unfortunately. Although I made certain to click on the "Remove" button this time, the package was still listed under the "Multimedia" section. :?

No worries ... This isn't a big problem. I used the command-line method suggested by mimosa, and that removed it.

That is weird. Can you try it again? Reinstall the salix-codecs-installer package, remove the lame package and run salix-codecs-installer from a terminal with

Code: Select all

sudo salix-codecs-installer-gtk
are there any error messages?

You can also try the same with the respective command line tool:

Code: Select all

sudo salix-codecs-installer

Sure, I'm glad to experiment with this again. :)

After installing the salix-codecs-installer package (via Gslapt), I removed the lame package via the Terminal.

Next, I tried

Code: Select all

sudo salix-codecs-installer-gtk
and this is a cropped screenshot of the result. (It did not throw any error messages that I could see):

Image

Since that looked like it was behaving "normally", I canceled / backed out and decided to try method #2:

Code: Select all

sudo salix-codecs-installer
A cropped screenshot of that output is below. (It also looks "normal" AFAICT):

Image

I canceled / backed out of that, and decided to run the codecs installer via method #1

Code: Select all

sudo salix-codecs-installer-gtk
to see whether it might produce some error messages during the installation of the lame package.

The lame package was correctly installed (as expected). When the installer finished, I clicked on the "Remove" button, then quickly copied-and-pasted the Terminal output [shown below]:

Code: Select all

david[~]$ sudo salix-codecs-installer-gtk

Removing package salix-codecs-installer-2.2.4-noarch-1gv...
I'm not sure if that 'Warning' embedded in there constitutes an error message ... However, this time the Codecs Installer was completely / cleanly removed from the "Multimedia" section of the menu.

I can't explain why the installer entry was removed from the menu this time, but not the previous time. (I am sure that I pressed the "Remove" button last time).

So I think this might have been an odd, one-time glitch that affected only me. Hopefully no one else will have this crop up ...

Thanks for your willingness to help me troubleshoot this! :)

Notes on upgrade 14.2 -> 15

i) Old file /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc had lines like these:

Code: Select all

# The Salix repository

SOURCE=ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/salix/x86_64/14.2/:PREFERRED
# And the Salix extra repository
SOURCE=ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/salix/x86_64/extra-14.2/:OFFICIAL
Now there is not Salix repository. Is it correct?

ii) In this file was an EXCLUDE line. In my system:

Code: Select all

EXCLUDE=^aaa_elflibs,^aaa_base,^devs,gcc*,^glibc.*,^kernel-.*,^rootuser-settings,^zzz-settings.*,-i?86-,^Pygments,^python-dateutil,^podofo,^pytz,^inxi,^libreoffice,^catfish,^pexpect,^python-distutils-extra
. Must I kept it all?

iii) In the link to the repositories https://docs.salixos.org/wiki/Repository_mirrors, some of them are not available for Salix 15.0 or are death.

iv) The next step is pkgtools and spkg. I've stoped the upgrade because

Code: Select all

# slapt-get -i pkgtools spkg aaa_base
Reading Package Lists...Done
No such package: spkg
But:

Code: Select all

 # slapt-get --show spkg
Package Name: spkg
Package Mirror:
Package Priority: Default
Package Location:
Package Version: 1.1-x86_64-1gv
Package Size: 752 K
Package Installed Size: 1741 K
Package Required:
Package Conflicts:
Package Suggests:
Package MD5 Sum:
Package Description:
 spkg (package manager)

 spkg is a package manager for Slackware that is implemented in C and
 optimized for speed.

 Package Installed: yes
I get stuck. Any advice will be thankful.

Unfortunately the heanet.ie mirror hasn't been updated in a long while. It still works, but it hasn't synced with the latest changes, so it is old. Look here for mirror health:
https://www.salixos.org/mirmon.html

and choose one.

if your question is about the extra-14.2 repo, you need to changed it to extra-15.0. We still have an extra repo in 15.0.

Most of them were added by you. A default 64bit installation has these:

Code: Select all

EXCLUDE=^aaa_elflibs,^aaa_base,^devs,^glibc.*,^kernel-.*,^rootuser-settings,^zzz-settings.*,-i?86-

Yes, the wiki might be a bit outdated. Look in the mirmon page I linked above.

If you use an up-to-date mirror for 15.0, you should be able to go through with that.

Hello gapan,
is it possible not to exclude "glibc-zoneinfo" updates by default?
