Salix Live Xfce 15.0 BETA1

Post by djemos »

Salix Live Xfce 15.0 beta1 is ready.

This release is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, while the 64-bit iso supports booting on UEFI systems.

A. Installing to usb device using install_on_usb.sh script
1. Using install_on_usb.sh script, read the instructions in this README
2. You can use the instonusb gui tool to install to a usb device, which is included in the live iso under the "system" menu. You can also create an encrypted or no encrypted persistent file.
3. Use rufus included also in iso or as i always do
4. Make a real installation to usb stick or external ssd using Salix Live Installer (SLI) a front end written in C which use the slackware-live-scripts in bash to do the installation.
Some Notes: In modern laptops which have only a NVMe ssd your USB stick or external ssd will be /dev/sda. If you have also an internal ssd disk in your desktop or laptop then the internal disk will be /dev/sda and external USB will be /dev/sdb.
Also your laptop may not have a disk writer device so you have to create a usb as above and then boot with it and use another usb or external ssd to do the installation there.
Since Persistent file become slow after installing a lot of software. I do not use it anymore. But i do a real installation on an USB and have my system with me. You will not notice any difference in speed. This is a real installation as in you internal disk.
When a new kernel released in repos then while running your system from your USB or external ssd can install this install-upgrade-kernel-ext-usb-gtk gui tool written in c and bash to upgrade the kernel (huge or generic). Do not use it in internal installations.
For usual internal real installations to nvme or ssd use the install-upgrade-kernel-gtk gui tool to upgrade the kernel.
Above tools use grub. So i suggest Grub as boot loader.

B. Sli (Salix Live installer)
Installing to usb using Sli, use the left area in SLI. This is a frugal install not real:
User can choose the filesystem vfat or ext3 to format the usb as with install_on_usb.sh script. But to create the persistent is not supported from live environment. The install_on_usb.sh script can be used for this.

real Installation to hard disk or USB stick or external ssd disk using Sli, use the write area in SLI:
For users installing in UEFI/EFI GPT partitions, if a GPT partition table does not exist, will have to be created using GParted running from the Live System. The following partitions should be created:
- the first partition has to be at least 300MB and use the FAT32 filesystem and have to sign it esp, boot using Gparted.
- the second partition has to be a Linux partition of any type. NOTE: if you choose grub then the partition cannot be in xfs filesystem because system will not boot after installation, as grub does not support xfs properly. (I don't know if this has been fixed. I used ext4 when installing iso's in vmware for testing). If you want to use xfs as your filesystem you must also use the eLilo boot loader.
- you can optionally add a third partition for /home
- and of course a swap partition
- If you want to install 32 bit iso in 64 uefi/efi machine with grub as boot loader then a forth "legacy_boot" partition needed. This has to be FAT16 or FAT32, 33 MB of size and sign it bios_grub using GParted.

Then can set user name and password , choose if wants to format home partition, (if the "format home" is checked, if there is no home partition, Sli understand this and do nothing or if user choose the same partition for home and /, sli ignores home and create /home in / partition).
Also can choose the core or basic of full (default) installation and proceed with installation
I suggest to choose the default Grub boot loader in SLI.

For live environment, standard user is “one” with password: "one"
User “one” is a super user. This is what you need to use applications need super user privileges.

You can also use the dd command to write the iso to a USB stick, but some features like persistence, will not be available.

You can download the iso images using the following links.

Thanks for this! For those of us who don't use Virtualbox, it's much appreciated!

Nice @djemos.
I have already translate Portuguese(pt) language in Transifex. https://www.transifex.com/djemos/salix- ... dashboard/
Please also check this: https://github.com/djemos/sli/issues/1

PS: The translations will be synchronized from transifex, right? Otherwise I submit them via PR on your Github.

Thanks

I don't know about synchronization. I have update github.
Ok i include both pt.po (pt_PT) and br.po (pt_BR)
And please report any issues after testing live iso.
I have tested the installation for both iso's in vmware.
Thanks.

Edit: While on live environment download the updated sli . Reinstall it and type in terminal LANG=pt_PT.utf8 sudo sli and LANG=pt_BR.utf8 sudo sli to check both languages.

During the short time I tested the live iso, I just noticed that the wallpapers are not all present and the first one appears without an image/thumbnail. I also noticed that if you enter the password(one) of su/root wrongly once, the system starts giving some problems and applications do not open and you can not even turn off the system...

I will test it again soon. But remember that I only translate the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. it should always be a native Brazilian translating the Brazilian Portuguese because there are some differences. However Brazilian Portuguese can always use my Portuguese translations if there are no Brazilian translators...

You can translate sli.pot file in the Brazilian Portuguese and i will get it from transifex.
I don't understand about su. I type in a terminal sudo gtkkeyboardsetup for example and give a wrong password for user one for two times then i have to give the right one and the window is appeared. what do you mean su/root. There is no su. Or i don't understand. I don't see problems or system cannot shutdown. Be more specific to reproduce it.
running xfdesktop-settings, i see all wallpapers. I have just included the same package lists included in installation iso.

Ok, I can also translate Brazilian Portuguese as long as there are no Brazilians available to translate and I try to "adapt" the translation more for Brazilian users.

When I said su I meant sudo, sorry. Also when you wrote "I type in a terminal sudo gtkkeyboard " you meant sudo gtkkeyboardsetup right?

About the problems I mentioned before what I did was download a new iso and install it on another flash drive and the result was that I no longer had any problems, so the problem was either with the iso or with the flash drive I used the first time. Sorry @djemos

yes Hugok. sudo gtkkeyboardsetup. :-)
No problem. I thank you for testing and translating. I have copied the pt.po to pt_BR.po in transifex. So since there are no big differences you can correct it.
Just tell me when it is ready to download it and recreate the sli package.

In transifex there are also other language translations for Salix Live Installer to be completed. Anyone is interesting to help is welcome.

There are some words in the https://www.transifex.com/djemos/inston ... /166488675 tool present in salix-live, that are not available in the translation file... For instance the word "Quit" when you exit the app.

As the image shows https://ibb.co/WVbCyC9 the translation to "Quit" in Portuguese is "Desistir" wich is mistranslated, should be "Sair" but i can´t find the that string/sentence in instonusb in Transifex.
