Opera for 14.1

Post by jpg153 »

Hi,

since long I am using Opera as the main Webbrowser and so far there always was a package made and hosted by Salix.
Is this to come or should I simply download and install the Opera for Slackware directly from the Opera website?

If not I would be more than happy if the packager would look after it.

Thanks.

You have several choices, but in the end they do the same thing; repackage the opera binaries. Here's you choices:
1) The Slackware package available on the Opera Website
2) Using either Sourcery or slapt-src build the package from Slackbuild

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-src --install opera
3) Download the the Salix 14.0 package and use the "spkg --install" command to install.
http://download.salixos.org/x86_64/14.0 ... 64-1ro.txz
or http://download.salixos.org/i486/14.0/s ... 86-1ro.txz

Code: Select all

sudo spki --install opera-12.16-x86_64-1ro.txz
These all install Opera 12.16 binaries, but the first does not install using the Salix package manager. My choice would be to use Sourcery / slapt-src option.

I have never used Sourcery...

Do I need to do anything else in addition to the code you offered?

I will check how to get there and ask further if required!

Can you move this to "Misc"...since its probably not the right place here.

Thanks.

I would advise against using opera as a browser at this point. It seems that they have abandoned development for linux completely, as they haven't released a new version for ages. In the mean time they are releasing new versions for all other platforms all the time...

Gapan,

you are about right...Linux is Version 12.6 and Win and Mac 20....

Maybe I have to get used to Midori or Firefox...more than in the past.

Sourcery is a graphical front end to slapt-src

You should update the package cashe first:

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-src --update

We haven't abandoned Linux. I run an internal version of Opera for Linux version 24. It will get released at some point, don't worry.

With regards to 12.XX we still keep and eye on it from a security perspective.

I would like to ask what is the license for opera. Can someone included for example in a iso linux image or have to ask for permission?
It is a fast browser but it is not gpl.

Thanks for info Ruario, I am keeping an eye on Opera Next blog to see if a Linux version comes out. Just for my info. Will the next version still rely on qt4 or will you be moving to qt5?
Thanks

We have not been qt4 based in about 4 years. Opera Presto stopped depending on Qt a long time ago. Don't believe me. Remove it and Opera Presto will run just fine.

The new version is Gtk/Aura based.
