While most of my browser usage is in the packaged Firefox, I'm still Firefox 52 ESR (from /opt) for some situations in order to use legacy plugins. It appears Waterfox would serve that purpose while also still getting security updates.

Waterfox is also more secure, and faster than firefox.

As for legacy plugins, you might try them on Seamonkey! They might work just as well.

Citation needed.

In any case, if you're interested in this, you can always get the binary from its webpage. I think it will also autoupdate itself, so no real need for a package.

It's based on older versions of Firefox, so the old XUL addons work fine in it, and it doesn't have the data collection properties of Firefox since version 52. https://waterfox.net

But that doesn't answer why it is (supposedly) faster or more secure. I would say it indicates the exact opposite.

Maybe so. "Faster" is just my own perception on my own computer.

I'm more than satisfied by Firefox current ESR for general use.

Will do. Or I'll try Seamonkey. For some reason I didn't even think of that until mentioned by Atrim.

Seamonkey is awesome! It does what both Firefox and Thunderbird do, yet it has thousands fewer lines of code than Firefox. It's pretty speedy, too.

Seamonkey was great, it has not had a release since July 27, 2018, which is horrible security for a browser. https://www.seamonkey-project.org/news
