13.1 to 13.37 Worth the Effort?

Post by sqlpython »

I continue to run Salix/Slackware 13.1. Runs stable, quick and I have quite a few dev tool setup. Plus I did a few involved PkgBuilds like the MySql Workbench.
I understand that the move to 13.37 is preference by need and comfort.
I have read and read and weighed from one hand to another but can not come to a decision to move Up to 13.37.

Question is:
Who has made the move to 13.37 via an Upgrade and Why?

I always just back up my data and do a fresh install. I actually still have 13.1 on one machine and am waiting till 14.0 to do just that. It works fine but probably bears traces of ugly hacks I've done from time to time. I welcome the chance for the occasional fresh start: even if it means an hour or two's work reintroducing my customizations, maybe I'll do it better this time, or maybe there is now a better way to do it.

14.0 is I believe "just round the corner".

The problem is we don't even see the corner yet.

@sqlpython
If you're happy with 13.1, stay with it. Unless you really need something in 13.37 that you can't find in 13.1, I don't think it's worth the effort. If it works, don't fix it.

I migrated from 13.1 to 13.37 by following the Wiki. Works ok. The only package important to look at when upgrading are: glibc and kernel. The rest could always be managed in a manner or another in case there is a trouble (and there wasn't for me).

But...I agree with gapan. Don't move just for the pleasure to move. If it works, no need to upgrade, 13.1 is still supported and get security fixes.
I think you need to move only on 3 reasons:
  • your version is not supported anymore;
  • you need a package/software that need newer/fresher libraries (plurals), so the upgrade is needed to install what you need;
  • you have new hardware better managed by the kernel of the next version (and it's not so true as you can install fresher kernels in old versions, if not too old)
A part from these reasons, you don't have to. And as it seems you don't fall in one of these reasons, no need except curiosity ;-)

Thanks @JRD
Sorry to reply late. I seem to get here about once a week.
All that answered support my reasoning not to make a rash upgrade, just to be trendy.
That is Ubuntu thinking.. :D
I was about to install SlackWare from a Slackware Download, even booted the disc.
But........... With the Salix/Akuna Installer why Bother?
If you could see my Original Salix install now I am a bit embarrassed to say that it bears no resemblance to the original install..
Running Xfce was KDE
Lots of Downloaded Weird Wallpaper.
Menu button is Slackware S
KDM logon is EOS theme..
ICons ... Simple Set
Eazel Blue Win Manager
Style Xfce Curve
Compositor with variable grades of Window Transparencies..
My Salix has really changed in looks but not in Content except for Dev tools.

So, I was thinking maybe I would start with a fresh Slackware as motivation.
Salix has done such a Great Job that I had to ask Why? There is really is No reason.
Besides, with vacations far between in dates and few in numbers, Salix let's me visit France, Germany and Greece and enjoy conversing with their good people. ;)
