is there any salix minimal iso available?

Post by Milad »

Hi,
I just find out that salix offers software selection choice during install process (full/Basic/Core).
I'm a minimalism guy which uses OpenBox/I3-WM with my own preferred configuration and selection of packages, so I will go with core and only the packages which i want, so I'm looking for an option to download only basic stuff, not a complete ISO which contains all the packages and a customized DE. I didn't find such a thing like that in download section, Is it possible/available?

sorry if it's a dumb question, consider it as a suggestion ;)
thanks

Possible? Sure.

Available? No.

There is very little incentive to put any effort towards releasing a Core-only iso. If you want to do a core installation you can grab any of the iso images that are available and use that.

That said, if your intentions are to install Core and then install X on top of it, you're doing it wrong... Unless of course you're doing it just for the fun of it and to learn stuff, which is perfectly fine. Otherwise, it's not worth it and you'll end up with more issues than you can probably handle.

Thank you, But Why it would be wrong?

I like to take control over everything on my PC, I like to know which packages are installed, what depends on what, how they are working together and it's fun too.
I always do the same and the best experiences i ever had with Gnu/Linux was with the distributions i customized up to down for my own needs and I'm still using them and they're just rock. on my main PC i have ubuntu mini and openbox and on my laptop i switch between Arch Linux and Debian time to times, and if some day something doesn't work! i know what may cause it and how exactly to fix it. but i know it's harder to do with slackware based distributions because of the way they resolve dependency.

My first intentions was installing Slackware which i used it once before, then I saw that i really don't like the way they solve the dependency things (install every things so that every things will work fine). in my opinion it's not slack it's stupid. maybe I'm wrong, i know it's good for some situation but it's not for all. I think package managers and the way they resolve dependences have more advantage over the way they do it in Slackware.

So i thought maybe the things I like to do (A clean network install with my favorites WMs and applications) is possible in SalixOS while i still have slackware stability and i can learn more and more.

Sounds like a Core install is what you want. I agree it could be a good learning experience. After all, if it turns into a mess, you can always just reinstall :)

Another approach might be to do this in a VM inside a full Salix install, till you get it how you want it; or indeed, dual booting your minimal Salix install with a normal one.

However, it's worth pointing out that the original idea behind Salix was kind of the opposite: it is for "lazy Slackers", who can't be bothered with the slog of making something as nice as Salix out of a standard Slackware install. Much of this default customisation is absent from Salix core, especially insofar as it relates to X, though you are right to single out its package management as a key difference from vanilla Slackware.

You probably shouldn't expect too much help here with any such experiments, because the response might well basically be, you've broken your system, and rather than trying to get to the bottom of that, best resinstall.

Core is mostly meant to be used for headless PCs or PCs you're only going to be used from the command line, no X involved.

If you want to have a minimal X environment, the most sane thing to do would be to do a Basic install (you could use the fluxbox edition) and then replace stuff you don't like with stuff you like. A Basic installation is only WM + Browser + file manager + Salix System Tools.

Thank you guys.

So, basic option sounds good, I should give it a shot. but i really used to do every thing manually and having a pre-installed DE doesn't make sense to me. anyway i still can't get it why you wouldn't suggest core! Is there any different between SalixOS Core and something like Arch Linux or other distributions base/core/net install? Is it configured for spacial (only cli) purposes?

I suggest that you use core.

So, in the past days I first installed Slackware + i3-wm, It was really good and I liked it and today I installed salix with openbox (base) it was pretty good too, But seriously it had everything that i don't want, I still think Core is a better option for me, anyway i decide to go with something else for know.

Thank you guys...

^ Sorry Milad, but you have recieved lots of help now. I think you are a little confused/restricted to what you want. You won't do Core, you won't do Slack proper, Openbox/I3 is bloated? Am I missing something here?!?!
