Mouse button mapping

Post by Sasquatch »

I didn't consider this a "problem" worthy of being in the Problem category. So I hope the Misc category is suitable.

I just acquired a Logitech Trackman Marble trackball/mouse for my laptop. Salix had no trouble with the basic functions, the mouse worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it in. My question is, how do I go about setting functions for the extra buttons? Do I have to alter a config file?

A configuration file for the X server must be created. Good instructions can be found at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Logit ... emouse_USB
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lo ... rble_Mouse
http://superuser.com/questions/374504/c ... -xorg-conf

For German readers:

Interesting device! Are you satisfied with that?

I'm not sure I modified the right config file since the one at the location given on that superuser link wasn't exactly the same name. Do I need to reboot to get it to function now?

As for the mouse... I haven't really had it long enough to decide yet. It's certainly better than the laptop touchpad. If I can get the buttons to do what I want then I think it will be fine. I do like the trackball vs a regular mouse since I can use it on the arm of my chair.

The desired configuration can stand, for example, in a file such /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-marble-trackball.conf. The names are not that important.

For Salix 14.2 the file belongs to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (better for more custom definitions). For 14.1, instead can also be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

In addition, to hold the configuration, a file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d can be created or an existing and suitable can be extended (better for more general definitions).

The X server does not monitor its configuration files. Therefore, the X server or GDM needs to be restarted or the operating system to be rebooted.

I suppose it's time I updated this by confirming that I did get the mouse buttons mapped the way I wanted. Everything works beautifully. I really like this mouse.
