Yep, it is smooth. Lot's of attention paid to under the Hood/Bonnett.
I have been installing a copy a least Once a year for the past couple of years..Quick and Reliable.
..But like you said.. It is not really comparable to the finish of Salix.

Kanotix, as it used to be called, was one of my very first distro (along with Vector Linux) when I was still pondering whether I should be focusing towards a Debian or a Slackware based distro.
I used to love its bleeding edge though you could get a broken system if you were not paying close enough attention to the announcement board before upgrading.

btw. the new Linux Mint Debian Edition is worth a try.
It's an rolling debian testing based Distro ... not as dangerous as Aptosid, with a bigger community and more built towards desktop usage ..
