On that second computer Salix is on the fifth partidion (sda5).

I have tried both solutions:

title Salix on hdd JRD solution
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=8000 root=/dev/ram0 rw quiet numlock=on changes=/salixcfg fromhd=/mnt/sda5
initrd /boot/initrd.gz

title Salix on hdd 4-stroke solution
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=8000 root=/dev/ram0 ro changes=/salixcfg vga=791 fromhd=/mnt/sda5
initrd /boot/initrd.gz

4-stroke solution is the only one that worked for me. Thank you for your patience. I should have googled to the solution.

JRD I might try some of your cheatcodes later.

@JRD or any other knowledgeable person:

I am french speaking and living in Canada. I have tried to use the following cheatcodes to set keyboard and langage in the menu.lst it does not work:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=8000 root=/dev/ram0 lang=fr_CA keyb=cf ro changes=/salixcfg vga=791 fromhd=/mnt/sda5

lang=fr_CA keyb=cf

What solution would work better?

This is for a live cd installation on hdd. Will these cheatcodes be good for a complete installation of salix.2
