Salix Live alpha2

Here is the second alpha version of Salix Live:

Alpha means that:

• it's working
• there may still be some tuning necessary
• some softwares may be added or remove from this ISO

Included features:

• booting from CD or USB (using unetbootin)
• splashy like in the current ISO
• automatic login (user: "one")
• password for root: live
• some cheat codes
• ssh-keys already generated for root
• default sound to 71%
• all ISO packages
• gparted
• ndiswrapper
• rdesktop
• you can create xfs files for save changes

Known bugs:

• X11 keyboard layout is not changed.
• error line when opening a terminal in XFCE.
• splashy seems to crash on shutdown/reboot.
• changes not tested an probably not working.

Key codes (to add to the syslinux entry line before running the kernel):

• lang= (fr_FR.utf8 for example)
• keyb= (fr-latin9 for example, only work in console for now, see known bugs)
• toram (copy all modules to RAM and eject the CD, you need a lot of RAM)
• changes= (file to use for changes. you can create one directly in the LiveCD)
• passwd= (to change root password)
• numlock= ("on" to enable numlock on boot)
• nosound (to disable sound)
• nohotplug (to disable udev)
• 3 (for example, to boot in runlevel 3, without graphical bootup)

So I downloaded the iso. Used Unetbootin to put it on an USB. It started to boot then complained that something had gone wrong and I should copy salixlive to an IDE/SATA drive. So I rebooted to find my Acer Aspire One's BIOS bricked. It's not really a big deal for me, I keep a recovery USB just for cases like this. I don't really want to try to duplicate it. So it could just be a coincidence.
ISO MD5s did match, so it was a good download.

I am looking forward to your next Apha release.

So I rebooted to find my Acer Aspire One's BIOS bricked. It's not really a big deal for me, I keep a recovery USB just for cases like this. I don't really want to try to duplicate it. So it could just be a coincidence.
ISO MD5s did match, so it was a good download.

I am looking forward to your next Apha release.

This is not a problem with the alpha release. It's a bug with the aspire's bios. I've had it with my aspire one, a close friend of mine has had it with his (not with salix in any case). It can be always reproduced if when the bios boot message is shown, you plug a usb stick in. Upgrade the aspire's bios to a newer version and it will be fixed.

Hi Gapan,

having tested alpha2 on several notebooks, i would like to make some remarks/suggestion:

1st: SPLENDID JOB!

2nd: on all note-/netbooks i have tested, alpha2 doesn't start from usb-cdrom
I think it doesn't load some needed modules in the initrd (i will investigate further)

3rd: As a suggestion: one could think about separating the Live version like the Installer
by editing the menu with noload=basic,full for minimal / noload=full for basic

This doesn't happen with any other live distros that I've tried on this usb key..

Actually I had nothing to do with making the live alpha2 iso. All credit should go to JRD, Shador and Akuna.

Good idea, I was thinking about that too.

So you boot normally from usb and it always destroys your bios? An OS (any OS) should never be able to do anything like that!

Remembering the same (boot-)struggle flux and me had when he switched from PLOS to Slack2Go as base for fluxflux,
i will try to port my kernel config/initrd to SalixLive (and test on the net-/notebooks) by this week.

It will last a bit, as there is a lot of work in real life...
