Connection Failed: Unable to Get IP Address

Post by ikke »

Would like to write 'This Salix LiveCD is almost perfect'. But ran into first big problem today.

Am using SalxLive on my netbook from an usbstick. Works fine! But found today that I cannot reach the wireless network I need. Wicd shows all the available wireless networks but the I get the above error message : 'Connection Failed: Unable to Get IP Address'

Anything I can do?

lspci -v shows :

02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device e025
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at f0100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [60] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel <?>
Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 00-15-17-ff-ff-24-14-12
Capabilities: [170] Power Budgeting <?>
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k

Feel this is ok?

Thank you for any hint.

Seems it's not related to Linux or any OS. The DHCP server seems to not send the IP address. Could you connect to this Wifi network from another OS/computer ?

Your Wifi card seems detected and well loaded, so your configuration seems ok.

I also had this happen for myself on one certain Wifi and it's still not assigning me any. So this could be one source of the problem.
Another possibility could be that the connection is bad. Then all can go well but dhcp finally fails. Try moving closer to the AP, but still not too close. I guess 4-10m and no wall should be fine.
I think I also saw this sometimes when the wireless driver (in your case ath9k) messed up. E.g. because of insufficient support for a certain chipset.

Guess you are right. Yes, I can connect to this Wifi network from another Linux distribution. And I can connect to other Wifi networks without any problem.

Right! The problem is why on that certain Wif? And how to remedy?

Thanking you for kind attention.

I don't know why that one wireless network is broken. I don't even own it and there usually enough other networks at my school, so that I don't care.

But I care!!! I have only one network at my university. And for the time being I can not access it through Salix. I have to use Windows or another Linux distribution ...

Have been using my usbstick with Salix LiveCd on an Acer Aspire One. Got same problem : no wireless connection. Could it be that there is somethng wrong with the Network controller: Atheros fiirmware? Of with the kernel being too old for the controller?

Thank you.

My Aspire One with its atheros wireless works perfectly here. So, it has to be a problem with dhcp on your side.

Yes, it is strange that I can't reach some wireless networks.

Have to admit : the more I work with SalixLive, the more I like it ... Have still a few problems : how to put some important settings in a module e.g. Also : autostart. I don't kwow xfce enough to find out where those settings are stored.

But if you allow me : any good advice on using SalixLive on a netbook?

Thank you.
