Live CD's and Radeon

Post by PelleB »

As I wanted to try out the Slackware Alpha, I decided to install it on my kitchen computer first. This is an iMac 8,1 from 2008 with a Mobility Radeon HD2400XT (RV610/M74). I could not get Slackel7.4 to boot from an USB-stick, so I tried both an older Slackel (7.3? I did not write the version on the DVD) and Salix 14.2.1. They boot, I get a menu to choose language, then it runs until starting X, then I get a black screens and everything locks. I get a

Code: Select all

LockHandleGopProtocol failure
, which I think is normal.

Then I decided to try the very same on my laptop, a Lenovo Ideapad 300 AST with a Radeon Stoney (Radeon R4/R5/R6). Same problem, or boot runs until starting X, then I get a buch of peculiar error messages, appearing very fast and then it stops due to respawning X to fast. I get the same effect when booting Slackel7.4 on a computer with NVidia graphics and the nouveau-blacklist installed but no other NVidia driver.

I tried to add various boot parameters (under the language menu, in the box), it did not help. The posts I could find on this topic were quite old, so no help there. So what can it be? Am I the only one experiencing this?

About nvidia.
Just delete the nouveau blacklist entry in /etc/modprobe.d/
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/BLACKLIST-nouveau.conf

Well, this is not about Nvidia. All these boot into a live session on a Nvidia-computer without problems, the blacklist causes problem after installing to harddisk. I can not really understand why it is installed at all, no other driver for Nvidia than nouveau is there. And if I install the Nvidia-driver, it will install the blacklist first and the driver on the second run.

xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist package included in slackel iso so it will installed in harddisk.
After installation remove it with sudo spkg -d xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist
and delete BLACKLIST-nouveau.conf
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/BLACKLIST-nouveau.conf

The output of inxi -G on the iMac is

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: AMD RV610/M74 [Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT] driver: radeon v: kernel
Device-2: Apple Built-in iSight type: USB driver: uvcvideo
           Display: server: X.Org 1.20.10 driver: ati,radeon,v4l resolution: 1680x1050~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: AMD RV610 (DRM 2.50.0 / 5.10.17-pclos1 LLVM 10.0.1)
           v: 3.3 Mesa 20.3.4
Should Salix-Live not be able to boot on a computer with that configuration?
