If you installed MATE now on Salix 14.2, please understand the risks associated with package update.
Salix 14.2 MATE should be arranged in the future.

1)
Salix 14.1 is MATE 1.8, Salix 14.2 is MATE (currently) 1.16.
MATE 1.16 has changed to Full GTK+3 operation on MATE official release.
(It was sequentially shifting from GTK+2)
As a result, it may be affected in part. (For example Xmodmap)
However, MATE investigates the existence of 3D and GPU and applies it.
(Originally it can be controlled with MATE Tweak, but for Slackware is not offered so far)
There is no worry that the CPU will become a heavy load in the old environment.

2)
The conventional desktop is left. It includes Xfce. You can switch between Xfce and MATE.
As mentioned above, MATE may be suddenly unusable.
I recommend that you leave the desktop such as Xfce.

3)
Either installation mode is possible. When installing from CORE, there is a hint to arrange the desktop on the wiki.
The environment installed by "slapt-get -install-set mate" will be between BASIC and FULL.

What on earth are you talking about?

No. Mate 1.16 is still mainly GTK+2 in Salix.

How? That's nonsense. Or your english is not so good and you're lost in translation.

Oops, I didn't notice this post before. Sorry!
phaeton wrote:1) Is the MATE environment that results from the above 'trick' any newer than what you get in 14.1? I realize it's just a point release, but that's at least +0.1 shiny!
Yes, it is a lot newer. Salix 14.2 has Mate 1.16. Salix 14.1 has Mate 1.8.
phaeton wrote:2) would a slapt-get --remove xfce4 (or similar) remove all the unneeded packages from the original xfce4 install? I'd hate to call it 'cruft' but I'm a fan of a nice and tidy system. The target system has but a 60gb SSD, and while that would be considered equivalent to a small country some years ago, it fills up surprisingly fast these days.
Yes, although it doesn't work exactly like that. This should work:

Code: Select all

cd /var/log/packages
sudo slapt-get --remove *xfce*
phaeton wrote:3) would it make any sense to start with a core or basic install in the above scenario, vs a full install?
Maybe, from basic. You'll get to pick your own set of applications that go with the DE then (office suite, multimedia players etc). Certainly not from core. But if you already have a full installation, no reason to start from scratch.
phaeton wrote:Thanks. I don't actually have anything against xfce (I used it for years and years) but I've grown rather fond of MATE on Salix. I was waiting for an official 14.2 MATE to come out but I understand that it may not happen this time around.
It probably will happen at some point. I just need to find the time...

Yup. So I stated "on MATE official release":
http://mate-desktop.com/blog/2016-09-21 ... -released/

I understand that some distributions leave behaviors with GTK+2 even at MATE 1.16.
(For example, Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS. Ubuntu MATE 16.10 is full GTK+3)

MATE and Xfce are switching to GTK+3 step by step. Either one will be reflected.
(LXDE will transition to LXQt instead)

No. You're misunderstanding things. Improving GTK+3 support, does not mean dropping GTK+2. Not yet, at least.

Oh, that's still a few years away. It will not happen right now. (Especially Slackware)
But in other distributions I am looking at the move work now.
Ubuntu, Fedora and openSUSE etc are starting to truncate GTK+2.

You realize there is a difference between "other distributions" and "official Mate"?

I use mate 14.1 before change to XFCE. (but, before mate, I use XFCE a long time)

XFCE is enough stable, enough speed, and all is enough, only terminal, ``xfce4-terminal``
missing `Ctrl-+` `Ctrl--` hotkey to shrink or reverse.

and, I remember, long long ago, xfce4-terminal, when find keyword in terminal with (Ctrl+Shift+F)
, the find result is not be highlighted, but this is fixed in Salix 14.2 version.

So, I think, if XFCE4 can improve terminal performance a little, I can keep use XFCE no changed ...
