Why an old GDM ?

I would like to suggest using another DM. the GDM version you're using is outdated, and the newer GDM needs an entire GNOME session to be loaded, thus requiring more RAM, GNOME dependencies, etc.
Moreover, you don't need GDM gnome keyring functionnality, you're using Wicd an not NetworkManager, which in many aspects, is better.

You could use SLiM, which supports :

PAM
theming
other DMs
gnome keyring support can still be enabled if needed (via pam)

What do you think of it ?

GDM is not outdated. What makes you think so? The version we have on current was released 6 months ago.

Slim on the other hand is an abandoned project. It hasn't been updated for years and it's likely never going to be updated again.

Okay, so SLiM wasn't a good suggestion, my apologies ;-).
However GDM in Salix 13.1.2 is GDM 2.20, which is not maintained anymore, hence my suggestion for a change.

Anyway, I don't know which version you have on 'current' as I don't track it, but if it's the latest GDM series, it still is a problem beacause it pulls many GNOME dependencies in (i.e gnome-session). I personnally use XFCE. I know how much GDM is heavy when used with a lightweight DE.

Is there any other option that is acceptable, then ?

The 2.20.x series is still being maintained. The latest release in the 2.20.x series was 6 months ago.

It's an option. I think it's a bit faster that GDM, but it doesn't have all the features GDM has and will probably never do.

If you want to have a choice between starting in LXDE or other options (including simply Openbox) then it's important not to use LXDM, as it has a bug (still exists at December 2010) which interferes with sessions other than LXDE.
This is from the link given above.

I 've tried fedora 15 xfce this afternoon and i've noticed they switched from gdm to lxdm for their xfce 'spin'. and it works :-) so maybe it has become an option finally... maybe you should look at fedora lxdm sources to see if there is a patch or if the problem has been corrected upstream.
I'm sorry if I bother you too much but I think this discussion should benefit Salix whatever comes out of this.

I'll be very glad to hear that LXDM has no major problems, at all, and that Salix OS will support LXDM officially.
