Substitute GDM with MDM

Post by lmello »

Since GDM is unlikely to be further developed, I'd like to suggest that the default Login Manager to be MDM (MATE Display Manager) in further Salix releases.

Could be a good option. I checked the new GDM on another distrib...they remove quite all features, useless. MDM could be a very good option then.

What about SLiM?

SLiM is a small lightweight login manager, simple to configure and looking much better than XDM.

It can be obtained here: http://slim.berlios.de/

I have tried MATE on both Arch and Snowlinux(ubuntu/MATE) with MDM and I believe that it would be an improvement over GDM for Salix.
GDM provides bindings to glib, dbus, pam and polkit that allow users to configure gnome settings and allow these settings to persist from session to session for Gnome.
I have a hunch that MDM will do a better job of this for MATE than GDM does, especially if the files called by GDM have been renamed for MATE.
I have been looking for a source file for the Mate-Display-Manager to slkbuid, but have been unable to find one to try it out.

There only seems to be a git repo yet (first result with ddg):
https://github.com/gfunkmonk2/mate-display-manager

You can just pull that repository and create a tarball yourself omitting the .git dirs.

I found this tarball on the Mint debian repo. http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main ... 0.4.tar.gz
I got gapan's slkbuild from this package http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.37/s ... 64-3gv.txz.
I guess I can replace gdm with mdm and edit the "source=" to the Mint repo. I might be little over my head with this. I think I'll get a good night's sleep then have a cup of coffee first.

No, it won't. MDM is exactly the same as GDM 2.20.x. Only the name has changed (and very few very minor stuff).

I would not have guessed that MDM was the same as GDM except for the name change. Is MDM still being developed?
