3.18 is current LTS with support until 2017 (most likely candidate), 4.1 is future LTS probably next release after this upcoming one, if I were to gaze into the crystal ball.

Have a feeling the next release will be 14.2 with a 3.18 kernel, then 15.0 with 4.1 etc... since it will be a new kernel, we will get a new version number. But its all BS at this point because only PV and the inner team know for sure. I doubt that the kernel would jump from 3.10 to 4.1, they usually don't like big jumps like that.

Personally, I think the reason that PV, et al. are so secretive is because they place anonymous bets in Vegas as to what's going on with Slackware's schedule. That's how they fund Slackware when the store runs low on customers.

Current was changed from the 3.18 to 4.1 August, so they are now going to go backward to 3.18 for a 14.2 release?

I could see it happening...I seem to remember a cycle or two ago when PV wanted to use kernel X.X but couldn't make it work to his satisfaction so he backtracked to kernel X.X-Y.

Plus, I did check LTS kernel versions and 4.1 is not (yet) LTS but 3.18 is. I suspect it will really all boil down to timing...when 14.2 is released in relation to what kernel is LTS'd at that time.

I think part of the decision will be if it is 14.2 release then I would expect 3.18. If 15.0 then probably 4.1.

There have been some problems with the 4+ kernel series on various distros, so I think the safer bet will be 3.18 and let the 4 series mature more. Remember PV likes ultra stable, not fairly stable.

Excuse me? Have you seen the changelog? Did you get no package updates during the last year? Are you sure?

This gives an impression that Salix is a dead project.

No new releases is far from being dead. Salix is closely tied to Slackware and since Slackware has no new release for two years now, Salix has no new release either. Because the default kernel in 14.1, as well as xorg (mostly) is becoming a bit old, there could be some issues with very new hardware. But if you have a PC that already works OK with 14.1, you don't really need a new release.

To be honest, I considered the idea of making an interim release with updated kernel and top level applications, but I finally dismissed it. It would mean breaking backwards compatibility with Slackware (but not compatibility with Slackware) and it would suck if a month or so later Slackware decided to make a new release anyway.

Updating the blog once in awhile will let people know that the project is still actively developed and relevant.

Gapan, just a question: Actually i'm using kernel 3.14 but i know out there there are distros (Manjaro e.g.) handling with kernel 4.x. Is there, a reasonable, way to upgrade the kernel further? And, is it reasonable to do that?

I think, i've an idea why slackware is so "late" with a a new upgrade (the reason why i came over from crunchbang and debian ) but, just out of curiousity, are there any rumors about a slackware 15?

Slackware-current is at 4.1, so does Slackel. I doubt current would switch to 4.1 if next release (whatever the number is) is going to use a 3.x kernel.
