(Solved) Network manager in place of wicd

Post by san3813 »

Hello
1. After installing salix 14.1, if we do not have wired network connection, we are screwed.
2. Wicd will not detect 3g network through mobile hotspots
3. So far, sakis3g has not worked for me, irrespective of the network service provider, dongle used
4. I am forced to copy wvdial, wvstreams on a USB stick, install it on the newly installed salix machine, remove wicd and install network manager
5. Atleast network manager will recognize 3g mobile network USB hot spot
6. If network manager cannot be made the default one , pl provide wvdial atleast on the install media
7. Atleast, there must be hundreds of users who concur with me on this aspect

gapan, 'yes' means what?
1. That Network Manager will replace Wicd in future releases?
2. WVdial will be included in the future releases?
3. Or, simply that you agree with me that "hundreds of users would concur with me on this aspect"?

If the 'yes' is for point no. 1 or 2, I am greatly relieved

I doubt very much that there are "hundreds" of users who would prefer Network Manager to Wicd because of problems with 3g. That sakis thing seems to work for most people, and as you point out, with help on the forums, and a bit of trial and error, you were able to find a solution for your own, atypical problem. That's the way Linux is supposed to work.

Sakis 3g is not a solution for mobile modem internet in our day and age, it's completely obsolete.
These days people use 4g or maybe better..

Wvdial is not that difficult to set up. That and a tool like what the lightweight distro antiX has, UMTS-Panel,
that generates a simple wvdial.conf ought to have been preinstalled.

Nm-applet is not necessarily a solution to everything here, I just installed Mint LMDE2 on my laptop as its the only distro where bluetooth
headset audio works out of the box. they had managed to mess up nm-applet so it does not work with my huawei 4g modem. Solution: wvdial, no problem.
