You can install Mate itself from the repositories. There may or may not eventually be a Salix Mate 14.2, and if there is, it will be ready when it is ready.

One issue about such Salix flavours is it is oddly difficult to get enough users to test them, so when it is in beta (if that happens) please do test if you can.

Thank for the fast answer :)

ok
let's say i install salix xfce 14.2

and then, i go to one of the mirror, for example http://mirror.its.dal.ca/salix/i486/14.2/salix/mate/
and install all the .txz in there

anything else to do?
i mean, wont xfce will be the default how do i tell salix to use mate?

Don't do it like that. Just do:

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-get --install-set mate
then you can choose it at the login screen, either as a one-off or the new default, instead of XFCE. In fact, you can have as many WMs / DEs as you like installed, memory permitting.

First thing i'll say.

On a fresh salix 14.2 install

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-get --install-set mate
does not work.

We first have to update Gslapt pkg to make all mate stuff appears.

Then your super code do the work :D

After that, i had to install all the soft i am used to. A rare one that i didn't succeded via sourery is installing chronium. It does not bother me that mutch.

For the rest, im very glad to run 14.2 and a fresh mate desktop!

For Chrome/chromium, you can follow Gapan's advice in viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7084&hilit=Chromium. I've done and it works very well.

Hey, a series of silly questions:

1) Is the MATE environment that results from the above 'trick' any newer than what you get in 14.1? I realize it's just a point release, but that's at least +0.1 shiny!

2) would a slapt-get --remove xfce4 (or similar) remove all the unneeded packages from the original xfce4 install? I'd hate to call it 'cruft' but I'm a fan of a nice and tidy system. The target system has but a 60gb SSD, and while that would be considered equivalent to a small country some years ago, it fills up surprisingly fast these days.

3) would it make any sense to start with a core or basic install in the above scenario, vs a full install?

Thanks. I don't actually have anything against xfce (I used it for years and years) but I've grown rather fond of MATE on Salix. I was waiting for an official 14.2 MATE to come out but I understand that it may not happen this time around.
