Salix in fresh, new look

Post by missTell »

For anybody interested, you can download a VBox VM Salix_14.2.1.6.1.ova here:

https://people.salixos.org/misstell/VMs ... .1.6.1.ova

A set of 8K 'Modern Flat' wallpapers are here:

Nice, those 'modern flat' wallpapers looks like a good assortment for the next release.

Yes, they do! ;)

However, I can't say that I like the blurry login screen. Perhaps we could use a different colour with a non-blurry background. We've done that in the past with variations of the same wallpaper. For example:
1. Boot screen (lilo): See here
2. Login screen (gdm): See salix.jpg in this tarball
3. Desktop background: See Surreal_Sunset_by_LtTibbles.jpg in this tarball

Maybe we can do something similar. Maybe a mostly dark lilo screen as the one in [1] above (no rings around the tree), then maybe the "Evening" variant for login screen and "Day" for the desktop background? I like the shift of the tree to the side in the login screen, but not the second bump (hill) to the right.

Other notes with respect to all VMs:
* mmolch-xfce is nice, but it doesn't play well with the gtk3 that is in 14.2. There are lots of issues with weird rendering. We'll try it again in 15.0, see how it works.
* I like the Antu icons better I think. The newwaita ones are nice too (probably the blue variant?)
* Although, I have to say, I like the monochrome tray icons better.
* With respect to VM 14.2.1.7, The dark taskbar is kind of nice. But the GTK theme craps out with GTK3 apps. The papirus icons are not as good as antu or newwaita I think.

We also have to make sure that whatever we include will work properly across different DEs (xfce/mate), WMs (fluxbox etc) and GTK versions (2/3). But that's testing that will be done once we get a 15.0alpha at least.

Blurry or non-blurry is a matter of taste.

Blurry makes sense for log-in screen, but one way or the other, you've got non-blurred version too.

"The second bump (hill) to the right" however, brings us to the actual problem of many otherwise fine distributions:

They all insist on using the logo on boot, on log-in and on the desktop.

That's completely wrong in my eyes.

And it ain't necessary.

These logos do nothing technically but are destroying the art ...

It's up to you to consider my wallpapers as the art or not, but the point here is that any image gets destroyed by logos.

On the other side, it feels like somebody would try to force me to identify with a distribution I'm using.

I always disable Fedora logo extension or 'photoshop' it out on all other OS.

Apple and Windows don't use wallpapers with logos neither.

Salix-gray would make a good boot-screen.

And ... it's easy to recolor.

Talking about Salix log-in screen, "the second bump (hill) to the right" is needed for the logo.

Please check these examples:

As of mmolch-xfce, the most important part is xfwm.

It can be well combined with adwaita (flat) and adwaita-colors.

It's that window-frame that brings most for that 'flat-look' which makes 'modern'.

I agree re: many distros over saturating the user with their logo. The Salix 'leaf' is, as these things go, my favourite as it is so minimal. However I agree that it will negatively impact the art for wallpaper (and certainly should be removed for the grub screen, if nothing else).

Really enjoying catching up on these design threads, I think the direction is incredibly positive. I'm a fan of dark panels (Nordic, with standard buttons rather than traffic lights is my Xfce preference bar none).

Also happy to volunteer to test anything I can if it'd help the effort for 15alpha.

Well, having the logo posted everywhere is certainly not mandatory in my opinion either.

The bonsai is back, it seems. :D
Nothing wrong with a bonsai and the Salix "leaf" (which I also like) in the same wallpaper - including the stylized "Salix" text. I can see myself using the "evening" walpaper, except with more blueish and darker sky - just to avoid high contrast.

Merry Christmas Salix community, and best wishes for a better new year, with less plague and more computing.
A pleasant detail in this forum: several people pick a picture of their pet as their avatar. Who am I to do otherwise? ;-)
