Slint64-14.2.1 is released.

Post by DidierSpaier »

Slint64-14.2.1 is released!

INSTALLATION

The ISO file for Slint64-14.2.1 is provided on sourceforge.net: https://sourceforge.net/projects/slint/files/14.2.1/

To know how to use this ISO image, read http://slint.fr/wiki/en/installation Just substitute this ISO's file name to the one indicated here.

To update your system after installation, run as as root these commands:
slapt-get --add-keys
slapt-get --update
slapt-get --upgrade -s # to check for available updates.
slapt-get --upgrade # to actually apply the updates.

NOTABLE CHANGES

The most notable changes are:
  • The addition of two desktops: LXDE current and MATE 1.18
  • An increased accessibility to visually impaired users: now Slint can be installed and used with speech and/or Braille both in text mode and in several graphical environments including MATE.
  • The installation of KDE is now optional. If KDE is installed, to avoid cluttering the application menus of other graphical environments the admin can just type hide-kde-apps: the menu entries of KDE apps will then appear only in the menu of KDE. This can be reverted typing show-kde-apps.
  • The lightdm and gdm2 graphical login managers have been added, both can speak.
  • To cope with the many graphical environments and login managers and alleviate the need of manually editing configuration files, several new utilities are provided:
    - orca-on ad orca-off allow each user to enable or disable speech and/or braille in graphical environments for oneself.
    - session-chooser allows a user to set the default graphical session for oneself, among those available.
    - This can also be done by root for a regular user with setsession.
    - login-chooser allows the admin to set the login manager, either text (the users can then after login start a graphical session typing startx) or graphical (among lightdm, lxdm, gdm and kdm) and decide to have speech or not for login, in text mode as using lightdm or gdm2.
    - The specific appearance of the MATE desktop can be restored typing mate-slint-theme.
  • Most graphical environments get a similar layout of the panels and their menus. In addition 60 wallpapers have been added, that you can easily set in KDE, LXDE, MATE and XFCE: just make a right click on the desktop, find the menu entry to set the background and pick an image. For instance if you like white magnolias you can set the picture you see on the attached pic here: http://slint.fr/images/slint64-14.2.1.mate.jpeg (MATE running) as background of Xfce or KDE or LXDE as well.
The changes since the release of Slackware64-14.2 are detailed in the ChangeLog: http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint- ... ngeLog.txt

ACCESSIBILITY

See the document ACCESSIBILITY:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint- ... ESSIBILITY

INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPGRADING FROM 14.2

Follow the instructions detailed in the document README_UPGRADE in this directory: http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/upgrade/. These instructions also apply to testers of a release candidate. Note that upgrading from a Slint version earlier than 14.2 is not supported at all and will most likely not work.

Alternatively make a full backup, install anew, restore from the backup.

Have fun ;)

Greetings,

Didier

Firstly I can't find md5sum. Whereis it hidden?

Made an upgrade following instructions.
Struggling now to make it work.
I am now "I have no name!"
Control Center not working.
Networking applet on panel in fluxbox shows being disabled
yet Internet is working.

I think I will make a new install and then report from there.
Will be easier.

As indicated in the download page: "To check the integrity of each file, just click on the letter i in a black circle on its right. This displays its sha1 and md5sum checksums."

You ran the scripts in http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/, right?

I tried hard to update the scripts prperly but could have missed something, though.

In any case creating a new user can avoid issues.

Yes. And please give to the MATE desktop a go. I know that you are used to fluxbox, but still I think you will like it. I do, and have been a fluxbox user for a very long time ;)

Yes. My box was just a mess I think already before.

Made a new install from DVD w/o kde.

Booted and got to the login window.
Entered my name, then it asked for password, however, there was no
cursor in the slot and I was not able to enter PW.

Went to root console, did init 3 and I as user could login with PW.
Started Flubox alright. Set runlevel to 3 in inittab.

Will give mate a try and report later.

I am not a stranger to mate. In fact have used it for a while.
I think there was even a Salix-mate version.

Here are some observations:

In mate-session:
-- Mouse wheel does not scroll to different workspaces.
-- In Control Center clicking on LightDM GTK+Greeter settings, System hangs.
-- On panel network applet shows disabled even so network is online.

In fluxbox:
-- On panel network applet shows disabled even so network is online.
-- On first opening lxterminal opens in right upper corner and cannot be accessed.
It cannot be moved with Alt.
After doing Quit Fluxbox> Restart lxterminal behaves normal. :?:

Others:
smtube and skype not in repo. :)

Atip wrote: In mate-session:

It does if the mouse is over the small rectangles that represent workspaces on the right of the bottom panel. This can be confusing for Fluxbox users as in Fluxbox the mouse should not be over the panel.
Atip wrote:-- In Control Center clicking on LightDM GTK+Greeter settings, System hangs.
This happens if you start in runlevel 3 (text login), I don't know why. I made a few more tests. If I type as root "login-chooser lightdm" then reboot, clicking on the icon does nothing but at least there is no hang. The same happens if I type login-chooser gdm" then reboot. Also in the latter case I see one more icon to configure the gdm greeter, but if I click on it it just says that I should be root to configure gdm. I really don't know where these differences in behavior come from. Maybe something to report upstream.
Atip wrote:-- On panel network applet shows disabled even so network is online.
I don't see this behavior.

In fluxbox:
Atip wrote:-- On panel network applet shows disabled even so network is online.
Not here.
Atip wrote:-- On first opening lxterminal opens in right upper corner and cannot be accessed.
It cannot be moved with Alt.
I see the same behavior, only in runlevel 3. That seems to indicate that the for some reason the window manager don't manage lxterminal's window at first.
Atip wrote: After doing Quit Fluxbox> Restart lxterminal behaves normal. :?:
Yes. Actually it suffices to restart fluxbox from its root menu (right-click on the desktop then Restart fluxbox).

I think that fluxbox needs to be restarted once to be fully functional. I see a similar behavior of TWM, by the way, as the keyboard shortcuts are not functional the first time it is started.

You'll have to use slapt-src or sourcery for these :)

Even if the cursor is not in the slot in gdm, you can actually type your password when the greeter asks for it.

Yes it worked w/o seeing a cursor and not seeing any *** for password
entering PW and pressing Enter fluxbox came up.

Got smtube from sourcery. skypeforlinux is in a .deb packge therefore could not install.
That is for sourcery and slapt-src.

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-src -i skypeforlinux
The following packages will be installed:
 skypeforlinux
Do you want to continue? [y/N] y
Fetching README...Done
Fetching doinst.sh...Done
Fetching skypeforlinux.SlackBuild...Done
Fetching skypeforlinux.info...Done
Fetching slack-desc...Done
Fetching https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.11.0.4_amd64.deb...Done
MD5SUM mismatch for skypeforlinux_8.11.0.4_amd64.deb
Installed it from Slackel64 where it is in the repo. :)
Edit:
As root opened mate-control-center.
LichtDM* did not hang. and in the login window I got now the cursor and password *** visible. :D

MD5SUM mismatch for skypeforlinux_8.11.0.4_amd64.deb
Actually the issue is that the md5sum indicated in https://slackbuilds.org/slackbuilds/14. ... linux.info is wrong as I find a different checksum if I do "md5sum skypeforlinux_8.11.0.4_amd64.deb". Otherwise the SlackBuild would repackage the .deb package OK.
Atip wrote:Installed it from Slackel64 where it is in the repo. :)
That's OK in this case because it is a repackaging. Generally speaking, avoid mixing repos intended for different Slackware versions.
Edit:
As root opened mate-control-center.
LichtDM* did not hang. and in the login window I got now the cursor and password *** visible. :D
I had a look at that. The hang as regular user occurs because in /usr/share/applications/ there is this line:

Code: Select all

Exec=lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings-pkexec
Therefore when you click the icon it runs lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings-pkexec which asks for a root password but without telling you in the GUI... So I should have replaced this line by:

Code: Select all

Exec=ktsuss lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings
If I do, when I click on the icon as regular user it brings up a GUI to ask my password, thanks to gapan ;)
Simlarly for gdm, I should have replaced in /usr/share/gdm/applications/gdmsetup this line

Code: Select all

Exec=/usr/sbin/gdmsetup
by:

Code: Select all

Exec=ktsuss /usr/sbin/gdmsetup
Thanks for the head-up. Now I have to find a way to fix that for all users...

The box is built and practically fully furnished.
Installed multilib and now my good old programs
are running, like steak, gpasman, saytime.

Networking applet on panel keeps on showing disabled.
The box to tick Enable Networking is disabled.

In fluxbox cursor has to be changed after every login with
Slint Control Center Look and Feel. It does not stay.
Just opening Look and Feel and cursor changes to what it was set.
No clicking needed on anything.
