Hello everybody,

The ISO is here:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/iso/

Documentation:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint- ... E-14.2.1.2
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint- ... stallation
More generally:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/doc/

So, what's new?
A lot of software packages are updated or upgraded. This include an upgrade of pretty much all accessibility packages to the most recent
version, a fairly recent kernel (version 4.19.30), many added packages and an enhanced installer.

New packages and features are detailed in:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/doc/New
Utilities shipped:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint- ... /Utilities

I think that some of these features and utilities could benefit to Salix and Slackel. More about that next week.

What's new in the installer:
  • It includes a kernel version 4.19.30 with its speakup drivers. This should allow to get speech in all installation languages. Caveat:
Ukrainian is not spoken, because espeak-ng does not include an Ukrainian voice yet.
  • If a hard synthesizer is used to install, espeakup is not started as it needs the speakup_soft driver.
  • The sound cards are probed at the beginning of installation, so that a working one be used during installation and set as default in the installed system.
  • GRUB is used to boot the installer if the machine is then in UEFI mode. GRUB will also be installed to boot Slint, in UEFI as well as in Legacy modes.
  • A new feature: auto-partitioning of the device on which Slint will be installed is provided, under the conditions that this device be dedicated to Slint and has a sufficient size.
  • The detection of the ESP (EFI System Partitions) and "DOS" partitions (actually partitions used by Microsoft systems) has been enhanced. It is based on the UEFI specification for the ESP, and on the file system type detected by lsblk for DOS partitions.
  • Most partitions are designated by their UUID in grub.conf and /etc/fstab
As kernel upgrades will probably become more frequent, a new script 'upgrade-kernel' handles them.

Best,

Didier

Didier, AFAIU you are not going to support Slint-x86 ?
Support x86 version of Slint and your Slint will get many new users from distros without x86 support.
- Are Slint's pkgs compatible with Salix ?

- To be honest, I do not understand the idea of Slint.
Slakel is Salix-current. It is a laboratory testing environmment for upcoming stable releases of salix. But Slint ?
What is the idea of this distribution? What was the reason for its creation ? A slack-based specialized distribution for people with visual impairment ?

No more, I just do not have the time to maintain Slint for two architectures in parallel.
Are Slint's pkgs compatible with Salix ?
Structurally yes. But just installing Slint packages on Salix could lead to issues with dependnecies not at the same version.

The initial reason was to internationalize Slackware, including its installer. Now it is also, I think, the most accessible Linux distribution: it can be installed and used by blind people withgou a sighted hep, both in console mode and in graphical environments (Mate 1.24 being its flagship) through speech and Braille, with also a lot of added packages mainly in the fields of documents processing, audio/video, communication as you can check looking at our main repository: https://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/slint/. See also https://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint ... AboutSlint

Best regards,
Diider

I have read. This is a very big task for one person.

Slackware-current has qt 5.13, freetype-2.10.1 Slint has qt5.13 freetype-2.10.1
Is Slint based on 14.2 or current ?

Slint its based on 14.2, however some components are upgraded, mainly to allow ship recent versions of other ones like Mate, or the Orca screen reader.

So, this upgrade for 14.2 is possible. Why don't salix's developers want to port your achievements (ready-made packages) to salix and make conservative salix more relevant ?

I can't answer for Gapan. Maybe he thinks that it's not worth the work and/or the risks involved, also considering that would need that he checks that the package itself as the packaging choices fit well in Salix.
