Slackel current rolling release (32 και 64 bit)

Post by djemos »

Would you like to have a Slackware-based distro which informs about updates happened to Slackware 'Current' and update your system with one click? In the end you will end up with Slackware stable. The latest Slackel has been synchronized with the Slackware repositories and has become 'rolling-release'.

Some new programs added or updated in the Slackel repositories include Firefox 12.0, Pidgin, VLC 2.0.1 and Calligra. Slackel repos include slackware current tree with dependencies and has been updated since kde has split in more than 90 packages.

A collection of four KDE iso images are immediately available, including 32-bit and 64-bit installation images as well as 32-bit and 64-bit live images that can be burned to a DVD or used with a USB drive.

Slackel current includes the latest current tree of slackware and latest KDE 4.8.2 accompanied by a very rich collection of KDE centric software. The firefox 12.0 web browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications included in this release, followed by Akregator, an RSS reader for KDE, Kopete, the KDE instant messenger and more. Wicd is used for setting up your wired or wireless networking connections.

In the multimedia section, Bangarang 2.1, Clementine 1.0.1, K3b 2.0.2 included. The Salix codecs installer application can be used, to quickly and easily install patent encumbered codecs to your system.

A wide variety of office applications are included. Calligra Words, Calligra Stage, Calligra Tables are the main office applications present while there are many more like KOrganizer, KAddressBook and the Okular document viewer. In the graphics section, Krita, Karbon, Gwenview, KColorChooser, KSnapshot.

The graphical Salix system tools are present too, making administrative tasks easy for everyone. Package management, as always, is done using slapt-get and its graphical frontend Gslapt. Sourcery (from salix), a new graphical tool for managing and installing packages from SlackBuilds is included.
It is very easy to put Slackel Live in a usb thumbdrive. Scripts to do exactly that in any *nix or Windows system are available inside the Livedvd iso files.

You can download all Slackel current iso images from the following links, using the Sourceforge servers.

These installation and live images includes only support for the english and greek language in KDE. Support for additional languages can be added by the user by installing the respective language packages for KDE using slapt-get/gslapt. These installation and live images includes most languages for firefox and calligra.

(The root password for the live CD is “live”. Standard user login is “one” with no password)

ATTENTION !!!!! Before upgrading your system, first install mtdev package otherwise you will not be able to use keyboard and mouse to log in X.
type su in a xterm
write root password
slapt-get -u
slapt-get -i mtdev
and then proceed to upgrade
slapt-get --upgrade

Have fun!

I`m very impressed with this release and having fun using it on a machine with newish hardware that needs a more recent kernel than 2.26.

The rolling updates take up a fair amount of space, so to anyone who gives Slackel Live a spin, it`s worth creating the largest persistent file you have room for.

Thank you djemos :D

Thank you mimosa. :)

I did not catch the slackware last big upgrade on current. The next release will need much less space, for persistent file.

Thank you djemos. I am dual booting Slackel with Salix now. I am having some trouble using Gslapt.
Do these repos look correct?

Yes they are correct. Do a slapt-get -u and you will have no problems anymore. :)

Slackel as well Salix repos, do not include a Slackware repository. They include a "ghost" repository that only holds the dependency info and diverts all traffic to a real Slackware repository.
If there are any new packages added or updated in a real slackware repository, the PACKAGES.TXT file is created again with dependency info from those .dep files.
Take a look at http://www.slackel.gr/repo/x86_64/slack ... CKAGES.TXT and http://www.slackel.gr/repo/x86_64/slack ... CKAGES.TXT. All packages of slackware current repository are there.

Thank you djemos. That explains how the repos work for me and why I have to go to
http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/ ... 64-current
to download packages for manual installation, because when I try to use Gslapt I get:

Image

or from a konsole:

Code: Select all

root[chris]# slapt-get -i bluez
Reading Package Lists...Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  bluez
0 upgraded, 0 reinstalled, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove, 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 508.0kB of archives.
After unpacking 1.9MB of additional disk space will be used.
1/1 Get http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/slackware64-current bluez 4.91-x86_64-1 [508.0kB]...Failed to download: HTTP response code said error
Packages from the Salix repo download and install with Gslapt or from a konsole.

I use slackel current rolling release 64 bit for everyday use. It is my main OS. I reintalled, removed and installed again bluez using either slapt-get or gslapt with no problem.
You dont have to go to slackware-current to download packages manually.
Please do first a slapt-get -u to synchronize with slackel repository

Code: Select all

root[djemos]# slapt-get -i bluez
Reading Package Lists...Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  bluez
0 upgraded, 0 reinstalled, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove, 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 508.0kB of archives.
After unpacking 1.9MB of additional disk space will be used.
1/1 Get http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/slackware64-current/ bluez 4.91-x86_64-1 [508.0kB]...Done

To be more clear. When updates happen to slackware-current this does not mean that at the exactly same time the slackel slackware-current repo updated also. A cron job runs on slackel server twice a day to check for updates at slackware current. So if you try to install a package which has updated on slackware-current while the cron will run after some time then receive the error. As you understand i can set cron to run every 15 minutes or every hour but this just put overload on server because updates do not happen every day or every week.

Further more only for 64bit it was a missing "/" (which i dont know when happened by me accidentally) in the end of path of http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/ ... 4-current/ and it created a wrong path for extra subrepo. That's why i said to run first slapt-get -u
And also thank you for the report helped me to find and add again the deleted "/".

Am I right in thinking that the latest Slackel no longer has that problem with mtdev?
